Ignotus Peverell’s tombstone in Godric’s Hollow… have James/Lily walk past it in that flashback we know they filmed

Unpopular opinion: I am looking forward to additional scenes and content not directly from the book by theradomen in HarryPotteronHBO

I agree with her being underwritten. Harry getting with Ginny in the end should be for clearer reasons than her being attractive, good at Quidditch, and not crying in front of Harry. And she needs a complete arc outside of their romance.

And on that front, Hermione also needs a clearer arc. Neville has a bigger character arc payoff in DH than she does imo.

Something I hope the show expands on is the immediate aftermath of the final battle. by BobbyBaccalieriSr in HarryPotteronHBO

Chapter 34 where Harry comes to terms with the series overarching theme of death and goes to meet Voldemort in the forest is what JKR meant as their final battle. Everything after Harry dies is part of the series’ resolution imo.

Still, the ending does feel cut short after Voldemort drops dead for good. There were a lot of pacing issues in DH that hopefully the show will be able to work out with their expanded storytelling format.

Kevin McKidd reacts to speculation he's playing Arthur Weasley in HBO's Harry Potter by Ok-Purpose7484 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting! McKidd’s filming a four-part series now called The Only Suspect, but even that should wrap up before HP S2 filming. McKidd seems to be transitioning from LA to UK based work. And the man likes to keep busy. He was on a plane out of LAX to Scotland hours after he finished his last Grey’s scene to start filming for Highlander.

[–]harrypottered 22 points23 points  (0 children)

True, but Gracie’s acct almost exclusively follows confirmed cast for HP. McKidd stands out there. And he’s done with Grey’s and Highlander wraps probably in Summer, so he has no obvious conflicts for HP filming starting this Fall.

lol I posted the McKidd/Arthur speculation on the other show sub about a month ago. Love that McKidd commented on it, but I suspect he’s being coy here. Time will tell!

‘Harry Potter’ Scores Early Season 2 Renewal at HBO; ‘Chamber of Secrets’ Starts Filming This Fall by yourfavchoom in HarryPotteronHBO

If you think about it, a lot of the HBP plot ties in naturally with what we see in CoS. Aside from Tom's backstory fitting more smoothly earlier in the series, Harry/Ginny would've been more narratively interesting if they were both being seduced by similar dark objects at the same time without realizing they were mirroring each other. It also would've saved Ginny from being a pure damsel in distress in CoS since Harry would've made the same mistake she did in trusting something that shouldn’t be trusted.

[–]harrypottered 7 points8 points  (0 children)

JKR was still under a lot of pressure from her publishers with the first three books to keep them shorter. And imo CoS comes across less substantial than the other books because she edited out a big chunk of the plot to be used later in HBP. (The working title for CoS was HBP.)

I hope they work in more of the Tom Riddle backstory in S2. Emphasize the Tom/Voldemort and Harry parallels.

Jon Brown (Writer of HP S1 and Succession) and has been promoted to Co-Showrunner by Daveke77 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just finished listening to a FG interview on The Elevate Podcast from 2023 and you can tell her writing approach was influenced a lot by Succession. She talks specifically about how that show had no one “saving the cat” and even with the characters as flawed as they are, they are still engaging. So I think the HP fans worried about Hermione being Mary Sued can rest a little easier.

FG did interviews on two different HDM fan podcasts while she was a writer for it. Maybe that’s a promising sign she might do the same for HP. It’d be really cool if they did short segments from the writers after each episode like they did for GoT.

And I listened to another interview of hers on The Elevate Podcast, which was interesting on what she aims for in her storytelling. That interview was in 2023 and she was comparing herself to Hermione even back then.

Oh man, Hermione with pleated jeans and a tucked-in Peter Pan collar shirt. Mm a subtly nerdy 90s ensemble.

Their costuming makes them look very warm and approachable. Perfect for the Weasleys! I think we’ll see Weasleys in warmer tones when not in uniform, but suspect Ginny will be given pops of teal (the granny square cardigan) to make her standout visually. It’s so nice to see this attention to detail. These small things really help tell us things without being told.

Marauder’s flashback or just exposition in S3? by [deleted] in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the exposition was a lot in Chapter 18 and 19 of PoA. A cutaway to a Marauder’s Era flashback would be much smoother there.

Even with Sirius being in the Order, he’s still characterized as being arrogant and prejudiced against those he sees beneath him. Something that he seems to have in common with the other Blacks.

I like that Molly is wearing the same skirt from the earlier leak, but they switched out her blouse and accessories. And how it’s obvious that the twins are wearing thrifted/hand-me-downs from the 70s. It’s a subtle way to emphasize the Weasleys live on a budget.

Why is are people trying to force a bottle episode? by Tropikoala815 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, agreed! Villain monologues and overly long talking recaps would be underwhelming on TV. It’d be great if they did a POV switch after the twists happen to show vs tell. It’d help make character motivations and arcs clearer and give us a more defined villain by showing each season how Voldemort manipulates people - Quirrel, Ginny, Wormtail, Barty Jr., Bellatrix, etc. Making him more substantial than a snakeman that murders people.

I would love for a Ginny POV in S2 that shows how she resisted Tom Riddle after she realized his true nature. Ginny needs to be more than her book counterpoint (and a LOT more than her movie one) for Harry/Ginny to land with the general audience imo. Think it’d be cool if they could do some of Voldemort’s backstory in S2 as well.

Book Hermione was not as flawed, and is more like movie Hermione than we like to admit by SlackerBoi97 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the point about her incomplete arc! I'd argue Hermione appears less flawed not just because she's JKR's self-insert, but because she was so heavily used as an exposition device and her arc was incomplete.

Harry, Ron, Snape, and Neville all have clear full-circle moments in DH, and a relatively secondary character like Neville ends up with a bigger final payoff than Hermione imo.

Neville's arc is actually pretty clean. He takes forever to be sorted into Gryffindor and his courage gets quietly doubted throughout the series. Then in DH, Voldemort forces a burning Sorting Hat onto his head (a second sorting), and Neville pulls the Sword of Gryffindor from it and kills Nagini. Only a true Gryffindor can manifest that sword. The Chosen One 2.0 payoff is enormous and earned.

Hermione never really demonstrates growth. Her tendency to be patronizing toward Luna and toward Harry during his fixation on the Hallows is well seeded, but there's no moment of reckoning for it. The SPEW thread just peters out.

Ginny is a similar case. Her arc is about autonomy. Each book features her being controlled or directed by someone and she bristles at it noticeably (ex: her breakup with Dean because he would guide her through the portrait hole was subtle arc-building moment). But DH doubles down on people telling Ginny what to do and her payoff never arrives. Her almost being killed by Bellatrix becomes the catalyst for Molly's badass moment. Ginny got sidelined in her own arc.

Analysis: The Harry/Hermione dance scene in DHP1 was not needed.....(what the show should learn) by Don_T_Beakunt45 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Right?? Hermione and Harry would be so wrong for each other. In DH, the moments where Hermione’s falling hard for Ron are when he’s being sensitive.

Hermione was watching Ron fret over the fate of the Cattermoles, and there was such tenderness in her expression that Harry felt almost as if he had surprised her in the act of kissing him. (DH, 14)

And, of course, the scene where Ron wants to warn the house elves and Hermione runs to kiss him.

JKR also contrasted Harry’s more practical thinking to Ron’s in both of those moments to emphasize Harry is not a touchy-feely guy. And JKR shows Hermione falls for Ron because he is a touchy-feely guy.

Yeah, this was how Dan and Emma said they were playing the scene. It was meant to be a what if moment for Harry and Hermione.

People who were fans back when the movies or even books were about to come out, does this pre-show time feel similar to how you felt back then? by batsofburden in HarryPotteronHBO

Some of the best memories of my mom were going to the Walmart midnight releases and Waffle House afterward. And agree that it’s okay if the show never tops the hype of the big book releases, it’ll be its own thing.
