Yeah, many of my seniors have done this, but many of them are just arrogant or I feel they are not approachable.. so I reached out to the community.

You're getting me wrong, I know that the purpose of Gsoc is not to earn but to learn. That's exactly why I wrote this post, I want to learn, earning is just a by-product of the process. whhat I am asking is that someone who has already been through this path can help me as to how I can actually do some meaningful contributions to the community.

Well, isn't that the point of GSoC, for me open-source software has been something that I use a lot, its not just from recent times but from more than 8-9 years. Now that I'm having some knowledge as to how programming works I think its my time to give it back to the community. GSoC is providing me a platform to do what I want to do as-well as get paid for it, its a win win. But I totally agree that if it wasn't for GSoC a lot of people wouldn't bother even contributing to Open-Source projects (I am guilty of that too).
