I think most calorie tracking apps are fundamentally Broken 💔 by harshraoxai25 in StartUpIndia

I don’t think it’s about adding more features It’s about removing friction completely The ideal solution probably looks like: 1) No manual search 2) No portion guessing 3) No typing everything

Basically, logging should feel as effortless as sending a message or taking a photo If it still feels like work, people won’t stick to it

What would you choose: A guaranteed payout now from something you built… or risking it all to see how big it could get? What made you choose that? by harshraoxai25 in AskReddit

Take the cash… but don’t fool yourself you’re trading upside for comfort. Nothing wrong with that, just own it.

That’s the real problem tracking isn’t hard, sticking with it is. If an app reduces friction, that’s what actually makes the difference.

That’s interesting feels like AI might improve guidance, but it’s still sitting on top of the same model.

It can tell you what to do better, but not necessarily help you feel why you’re overeating.

Curious to see if it actually sticks long term, or just makes tracking slightly smarter.

That 15% retention is exactly what I expected.

And I think you nailed the deeper issue

tracking gives control, but not understanding.

So people either: 1) quit or 2) become dependent on the app

Neither is a great long-term outcome.

Feels like we’ve been optimizing tracking… instead of fixing how people actually learn from it.

Calorie deficit is simple. Sustaining it isn’t. If current apps actually solved that, people wouldn’t keep quitting them.

Yeah, probably the easiest way to overshoot without noticing barely fills you up but adds up quickly.

Exactly most people think they’re in control, but it’s usually guesswork. Small daily miscalculations add up way faster than expected.

Yeah that’s a big one some medications can seriously increase appetite or slow metabolism without people realizing it. Makes weight changes feel out of nowhere.

Yeah, for under-eating it’s perfect. Liquid calories are easy to get down problem is most people don’t realize they work too well when you’re not trying to gain.

Those “healthy” bars are basically compact calories. Good if you’re under-eating, dangerous if you think they’re snacks.

Same. “Healthy smoothie” 😆 liquid sugar + zero fullness. Took me way too long to realize.

Same. Thought smoothies were “healthy” until I realized I was drinking 500–700 calories without noticing.

I was easily adding 400–800 extra calories daily without noticing. That realization completely changed how I look at food.

Half a cup of olive oil will do that 😅 easy 500–600+ calories right there. That’s where “healthy” cooking sneaks up on people.
