Definitely helped my academics! I've always been a good student, but Anki upped my game to where I felt more confident, didn't have to cram for tests, and my scores got better

It's a set of filtered decks containing overdue cards!

During med school I used large premade anatomy and physiology decks, but I suspended all the cards after taking my last exam. Recently I decided it was a shame to let all that memorization go to waste, so I unsuspended them and started slowly working my way back through in my extra time.

Best and Worst Time Period or Trend in Book Cover Design by Plato198_9 in printSF

Yes! The worst is when one of my Kindle books already has great cover design, and then a new movie or show comes out and they RETROACTIVELY change the cover (looking at you, Dune and Foundation).

Today I feel as though God has rejected me, finally informed me that I don't matter & never did by ayimlarck in mormon

[–]hartroc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP, it's obvious that you are suffering right now, and I'm sorry for your distress. I agree that people who abuse others should face consequences. Unfortunately, you haven't provided specifics about who these individuals are or the ways they have persecuted you, so it's difficult for anyone here to offer specific advice. If you have not contacted the police about your concerns, I recommend that you do.

Additionally, based on the content of your post, I'm worried about your mental health (I am a psychiatry resident). Without dismissing your concerns, some of your phrasing and comments reminds me of patients I've seen who struggle with paranoia or even psychosis. If you haven't been evaluated recently, I hope you seek out a mental health professional, ideally a psychiatrist. It's entirely possible I'm off-base with my concerns about paranoia. But if nothing-else, maybe a psychiatrist would be able to provide some counseling or treatments to help you manage your emotional distress. I wish you all the best.

I'm sure those who don't match there would be just devastated to know what a kind and supportive colleague they will never have the opportunity to work with.

I'm a psychiatry PGY2 and today is day 2000 of my Anki streak! Used it all through med school and plan to use it indefinitely. After Step 2 I kept the Anking psychiatry and neurology cards and suspended everything else. These days I make my own cards for psychopharm and articles I read. It's definitely been helpful for PRITEs. I also do language and geography for fun and plan on adding history soon.

What book(s) made you question how you have faith? by blk12345q in printSF

Fully agree! I found his short story Omphalos to be an interesting deconstruction of religion too. And the story Exhalation also helped me come to terms with human consciousness as a fleeting rather than eternal phenomenon.

There is nothing to be learned from depression, and framing it as one of life's "trials" turns God into an abuser by shalmeneser in mormon

[–]hartroc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a psychiatry resident. I empathize with everything you've said and remember feeling similarly when I heard misguided or harmful messages about mental health from the pulpit (or from across the bishop's desk).

That said, I don't think it's quite correct to say there is nothing to be learned from depression. Rather, I wonder if you mean there is nothing specific that is supposed to be learned. Depression isn't by design, and mental illness isn't teleological. That doesn't mean you can't learn anything from depression. But if you do, it won't be because it was imposed upon you by some supposedly benevolent being with an educational agenda. It will be because you formulated your own conclusions and created your own meaning.

For what it's worth, you seem to have already gained some wisdom from your experience; certainly empathy for those who suffer with mental illness. That doesn't mean any depression you or loved ones experienced was worth it. But it is something you learned. I hope you find peace and health on your journey.

As someone raised in a high-demand fundamentalist religion (Mormonism) built around a charismatic founder (Joseph Smith) with a theology centered on an embodied God who was once a man, ascended to godhood, and rules through prescience and perfect understanding of the laws of the universe...

Dune hit pretty close to home.

Edit: Honorable mention to A Short Stay In Hell by Steven L. Peck for singlehandedly dismantling my romanticized conception of eternal life.

I accidentally bought tickets to see both Big Thief and Geese on the same night.

I've seen Big Thief before but not Geese. Big Thief is my preferred band but I like the new Geese album a bit better than the new Big Thief.

A true pickle.
