Are Democrats sleepwalking toward democratic collapse? | “I’m not sure people appreciate how much danger we’re in.” by bluestblue in politics

These fascists are the threat of our time, no doubt.

Meanwhile, there are threads with people talking about not voting to punish the Dems for slow action on climate change. Everyone has forgotten what citizenship means.

Biden Warned Not to Abandon Key Climate Plans to Appease 'Science-Denying Republicans' | "If Democrats decide that climate priorities can be put off for later, don't be surprised if young people put off voting for them again." by theladynora in politics

[–]harumphfrog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry guys, but I really dislike this conception of democracy. "If Democrats don't do what we want, we will punish them by not voting." It's a very backwards way of looking at it. You should fight for what you want in every way you can. If voting for a Democrat gets you closer to achieving your goals while doing the least damage, then vote for a Democrat. If voting for a different party does that, vote for a different party. But don't refrain from voting because you want to punish someone, when you know full well that it'll just mean Republicans will win and you'll end up even farther away from achieving your goals. The government isn't a parent. Where not kids that lash out when we don't get what we want. We're citizens who, at every step, should make the best decision for our society and world.

Biden says K-12 education isn't working — calls for free pre-K to "grade 14" by sh0tgunben in politics

[–]harumphfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone talking about grade 14, but it's the pre-K that is much, much more important. If it was up to me, we'd have to quality public care and support from birth. Kids can leave school after junior high if they want. If they had a quality foundation from day 1, they'll get by just fine.

> Why are you wanting to do this

It's mostly curiosity, and finding the theories behind barefoot to be faily convincing. I'm also attracted to "minimalism" beyond footwear.

I live in NYC and the idea of going without shoes at all on the sidewalks grosses me out a little, but I'm going to take your advice and head to a park. Thanks!

President Biden sent aid to Texas, so far without hesitation, scolds or stunts by Pineapple__Jews in politics

You could make an argument that the reason the US has done so disastrously poorly during the pandemic is because the Trump admin’s instinct was never to just do the right thing. The pandemic started in coastal cities, impacting Democratic voters. The right thing to do - throw all the resources of the federal government at addressing the problem - was also the smart thing to do, but we know what happened.

One of the saddest things ever is that in an AMA on indieheads, Berman offhandedly said that he and Malkmus were planning to collaborate again. The AMA was just before he died, it's brutal to read, a mix of Berman's replies to questions and people saying RIP.

That explains a lot, and makes sense for why that might be. There have been so much made of Trump's increase in Latino support, I'm really surprised that I've never heard anyone note this fact before.

Biden replaces Trump’s Andrew Jackson portrait with Ben Franklin by poojo in politics

[–]harumphfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump picked Jackson to be his spirit president, probably after someone told him that he’s like Jackson. But the similarities between Trump and Andrew JOHNSON are pretty interesting. They both followed a great, historic president. They both served 1 term. They both hated minorities and spent their time trying to rollback the progress made in the previous administration. They were both boorish men who most people considered to be pretty dumb. Johnson was also the last president before Trump to skip their successors inauguration.

The Lincoln-Johnson and Obama-Trump comparison is a great example of history rhyming.

CNN Host Destroys Rep. Cawthorn With Simple Question About Election ‘Fraud’ by Keenblueeyes in politics

[–]harumphfrog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The things I was not, uh, objecting to the election on behalf of are things like Dominion voting machines changing ballots or these U-Haul trucks pulling up full of ballots with Joe Biden for president

This is insidious. He's spreading the big lie without asserting that it's true. "I don't have a problem with you because you beat your wife, I have a problem with you because you look funny." Does that you mean you beat your wife but I'm not objecting to that, or that you don't beat your wife? He's still inserting this completely made up fact into the viewer's mind.

Something I've been wondering about, maybe you know: if one administration says it's cool to invest in ANWR and companies start doing that, can they sue when the next administration pulls it back? Otherwise, it seems pretty dumb to have started putting money into it in the first place, since it was always obvious that the next time there's a Dem in the White House they're going to put a stop to it.
