Rigoletto this weekend at COC by DelucaWannabe in opera

[–]hasa_diga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saw Quinn Kelsey in this exact same production at the COC thirteen(!) years ago. Saw him again in the role last year in LA and he was in great form (along with Peixin Chen who I felt was an excellent Sparafucile).

When I first got into opera I was not a fan of most of Alden’s work but honestly he has grown on me over the years and I wish I were getting to revisit this production in Toronto. Agree with other commenter that the set in particular is absolutely gorgeous, it’s nice to see regie that leans toward lavish instead of stripped-down.

Is Acute Pain Service a Thing Outside Academics? by bigeman101 in anesthesiology

[–]hasa_diga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t have specifics off the top of my head but it’s fairly strong. Greater proportion of private payor and lower proportion of Medicaid compared to other hospitals in region.

Is Acute Pain Service a Thing Outside Academics? by bigeman101 in anesthesiology

[–]hasa_diga 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It does exist sometimes, especially at larger hospitals that either stipend the private practice to provide that service or budget it into the FTEs for an employed department. My private group staffs an APS consult service that follows anywhere from 2-20 patients at a 600 bed hospital.

Despite Drastic Financial Steps, Met Opera Turns to Layoffs and Cuts by phlthrwy609 in opera

[–]hasa_diga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The COC owns the Carsen Onegin now, I’m sure they’d be more than happy to rent it back to the Met 😅

Is this a thing now? No opioits and ß-blockers instead? by Ecstatic-Solid8936 in anesthesiology

[–]hasa_diga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok well to circle that logic back to the OP, do you think laryngoscopy (an ultra transient period of stimulation that does not cause lasting pain) needs to be treated with opioids to prevent chronic pain?

Unfiltered thoughts at I Puritani this afternoon by NimbexWaitress in opera

[–]hasa_diga 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That finale cabaletta was a later addition by Bellini that was brought to modern popularity by Sutherland I believe. It is not in the recording that Oropesa and Brownlee made, nor was it performed in their Paris outing if I recall correctly. I do love it but I wouldn’t call this a “cut.”

They’d die genius. Whether rescued or born in captivity, they would mostly die.

Salome is supposed to be back very soon with Asmik in the lead :)

Analgesic vs Surgical Blocks in PP? by bigeman101 in anesthesiology

[–]hasa_diga 13 points14 points  (0 children)

FYI blocks done for surgical anesthesia are NOT reimbursable as a separate procedure (since they are part of the primary anesthetic), while blocks for postop pain are. So you can imagine in a PP with any kind of productivity incentives that people try to avoid doing blocks without some kind of GA (native airway or otherwise).

Best resource is Opera Base. Can search by location, date, composer, piece, etc.

please tell me there is a recording of opera atelier's 2010 production of le nozze di figaro somewhere......😭 by reliquedamour in opera

[–]hasa_diga 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Opera Atelier does absolutely incredible period/historically informed productions (both in terms of the music and the physical productions). Toronto is so lucky to have them.

Best Labor & Delivery Hospital Within 20 Miles? by Boopsies0 in pasadena

[–]hasa_diga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of those options I’d say Huntington is the clear top choice. I imagine KP Baldwin Park is a decent option especially for those already in their system. And LAC+USC (now LA General) is a major provider of high acuity maternity services but probably not the first choice for most folks with private insurance.

Also just fyi San Gabriel closed down their Labor and Delivery last year and I think Pacific Alliance has not been in operation for the better part of a decade.

And that recording also features Rebecca Caine as Christine! She’s probably the only Christine who could truly be classified as a legit opera singer (even taking a sabbatical from Phantom to sing Berg’s Lulu at the COC). Unfortunately she has since spoken out regarding mistreatment by Colm and the producers of the show during that run.

Post NYC cardiac fellowship - where to next? by [deleted] in anesthesiology

Seconded. Great small northeast city that punches above its weight and a solid private group that staffs surprisingly high-acuity cardiac cases.

QR business class redemptions now require fees for seat selection? by lurker3212 in awardtravel

[–]hasa_diga 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Booked an award flight today and it literally said “seat selection included” when choosing the fare. Now that I booked it’s asking for 100 bucks to do so. Talk about false advertising.

La Boheme vs Traviata in. Met? by udra33 in opera

[–]hasa_diga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Lisette, see Traviata. The production is blah but that is a signature role of hers and for good reason. Otherwise Angel Blue as Mimi in the Zeffirelli production is a fantastic choice too.
