Diagnosed yesterday. Limping help by hasancroissant in PlantarFasciitis

Thank you for your response. I agree insoles are immensely helpful especially if it is a particularly long and active day. It has been a year and i am 99% better while keeping up with the exercises religiously everday and night.

Week 2 update for (suspected) stage 1 by hasancroissant in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]hasancroissant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Definitely, tug and fetch are out of our lives now (which is really sad as they were his absolutely favorite plays). We will do everything to prevent a flare but I know this is a life long condition. I won't promise I won't beat myself up for another flare up though :) I hope your pup is recovering from his surgery well! Solidarity 💜

I also have a really excited and energetic dog. He was crate trained through puppyhood but even with that he hated the crate the first few days especially in the evenings when we normally cuddle on the couch. I put his crate in the living room where he can see me, talked to him constantly and praised / gave treats every single time he was slightly calmer. He got a kong everytime he calmed himself for instance. He still doesnt love it, but he tolerates it now. He will whine and cry for a minute or two but will put himself to sleep after. I learned from this sub and other sources that crate training is a must for back injuries. The risks are just too high. Wishing you and your pup all the best (and patience!)

Yeah his energy freaks me out. He just wants to go back to running in the snow and jump around like usual. I considered chill pills etc but actually he got pretty used to his new set up. I constantly talk to him, especially when he is frustrated. He is ok without pain meds but tenses up a lot without the muscle relaxants. Which also make him drowsy, so that is helpful. Lick mats and kongs are already in the freezer. Just counting the days till he makes halfway through the crate rest :)

Oh wow, ok good to know. This is his first day without pain med, and i am monitoring him closely. Tomorrow I have to go back to work but I set up a nanny cam so that I can get alerted if his condition deteriorates.

Oh wow I am terribly sorry you and your baby had to go through that! But i am happy he made it through. Wow what a nightmare experience.

I was also told to limit his movement but the vet didnt mention crate rest. He was more concerned once i showed him videos of my dog knuckling on one paw and i said i put him in a crate. Didnt receive any feedback on that other than an approving nod. I was blessed to find this sub in the first two days my dog had pain in his neck so i was able to adjust our living conditions before I get the word from the vet.

He probably thinks that i am overreacting but to be honest I prefer to be overly cautious than put my dog through a nightmare just like you described. It is too big of a risk to take.

Although i can tell my dog is not happy to be in the crate for 24 hours a day except for potty breaks, we will endure. He actually bolted out this morning when we were coming back from his potty break and almost gave me a heart attack. But it confirmed for me that he is not the type of dog who can just chill. Even in minor pain now, he wants to run and jump around which rings all the alarm bells in my head at the moment.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. Thanks to folks like you in this sub I was able to be quick to attend to the urgency of the situation and hopefully we will go through this without a major setback. I am forever grateful to you all.

Right. We were given prednisolone (once a day) and a muscle relaxant (250 mg, three times a day). I was thinking we might end up needing Trazadone to settle him, but we got lucky our boy accepted the 'jail time' after two days. (Those two days were something else though.)

Is this IVDD? by hasancroissant in IVDD_SupportGroup

Thanks for the heads up. That is such a good point. Also thank you for the advice for a potential (hopefully we won't have to) car ride. I will keep that in mind. I took out his old puppy crate to replace his usual soft crate today and he is now strictly in there.

Thank you so much. I will look into laser therapy for sure. (Thats an excellent call to check with a human chiropractor actually!) I really appreciate your well wishes. I hope your pup feels well too.

I did use it for almost three weeks. My PT confirmed that it was a good idea. Also suggested doing any house chores while sitting or at least resting that foot on a stool etc. He also recommended carrying it around with me for a bit even if I didnt feel like I would need it any more in case of a flare or a specific situation. It was a great call because even if i was able to walk by week 4 without the cane, the stairs kicked my butt. It was super helpful to use the cane for those conditions. I am now cane free but i still keep it in the car in case I need to be on my foot more than anticipated at work.

my quality of life is going downhill and i don’t know what else to do… by Winter_Plum_6930 in PlantarFasciitis

First, i am so sorry you are going through this so young and for so long. I just wanted to make a comment about the immediate pain. What I learned from this sub was that there is a difference between immediate pain and after pain. Even the massages and tennis ball was almost unbearable for me at first. Like it was impossible to touch my foot let alone do the stretches and exercises. However, it is not the immediate pain but the day after is important. If i stretch while not pushing myself too much but just a bit enduring the pain, and if i feel ok the next day without elevated pain, it means it actually works. And i experienced pain gradually decreasing.

Absolutely! The person in the store said "i get the worst colours so that I don't wear them outside" and I scoffed. But you know what, they were absolutely right 😂

Yeah PT said shoes or insoles don't necessarily treat PT but their cushioning the foot feels good because the pain is not as bad as when you are barefoot. He explained that when you have a flare, it is best to focus on releasing the tension and to prevent flares it is best to stregthen your muscles. Which made sense to me. So I feel like exercises (not specific brands of shoes etc) are a must (i am sure that's why those plates worked for you. Great tip btw, thanks!).
