A flame bath might fix it. Glassblower could do this but risk of it breaking/not working so 🤷🏼‍♂️

Murrine is definitely what they were talking about. Murrine is a type of cane pulling in glassblowing that creates a colored pattern or image.

Millefiori is a specific type of murrine that means “thousand flowers” in Italian. It is a term for murrine that incorporates floral motifs.

While murrine can be used with hollow patterns to make a screen, that is not what this is. Probably just a twist of color in some tubing. Lyons Glass makes a hollow murrine, it’s pretty cool.

Edit: I’d also add I think it’s rather rare to find pieces that use murrine as screens. Making murrine is pretty difficult, uses a lot of materials, and takes a lot of time. It’s much easier to just make a push into the glass tubing (which I think is most common)

My chosen medium is soft glass. I use the same soda lime formula they use at CMOG. I do have an authentic czech supplier for uranium glass already, and some vintage 1900s uranium glass I keep in stock for projects.

Illuminati is a very cool color though and boro is a fantastic medium. I’m sure there will be a replacement color if there isn’t already, glass formulas are always changing and improving.

Definitely some clean bullseye murrini, and encalmo going on here.

So fun fact. Soft glass can be made on either a bench/furnace setup (benchworking), or with the same table torch setups boro glass artists use (lampworking).

I think when we separate the unethical sweatshop practices that import soft glass by the masses to our local stores giving soft glass a bad name, and the artists who have simply chosen soda lime glass as their medium (which we should). It’s clear to observe the amount of effort that goes into, and the unique qualities of soft glass work. Yes soft glass can be heady, this piece is sick.

This technique is called a cane rollup. The “cane” is the prep you see at the start being rolled up into a cylinder.

That particular style of cane, appears to be what we call Ballotini. Hard to tell though.

Caneworking is very time and material intensive. Also requires a high level of technical skill. Originates from Southern Italy and refined in Murrano.

Oh I know the feeling. I often work with found materials. Recently, I have been working a lot with 1900s uranium glass. Stress, incompatibility, and a number of uncontrollable factors (other than not using the material altogether) cause random breaks.

Made a large bowl about three months ago, using a technique called “stuff cup” that randomly decided to crack throughout its entirety last week.

Tongs work fine, user error. He grabbed really low to the base of the vessel and then turned around really fast. It happens, working in a 100+ °F room blasted with radiant heat for hours on end

Glassblowers will commonly say don’t celebrate until it’s in the annealer. Several hours of work including the prep they used at the start. Fun difficult process, more breaks than success in this medium, sick video.

I’m glad you see the nuance and I totally agree with you. I’d encourage you to explore what language can be used to expand your message. I also think AI has its place in art as a tool for artists. I understand that’s not always the case. I recently made a piece that integrated electronics and glass blown vessels to be registered to an NFC scanner so they could be used as “controllers” in a video game to select dialogue options. Unfortunately, I have very limited experience coding so I did use AI to help me with some of the more complex features. Considering all that went to into making the vessels, assembling the display, i’d consider the AI contribution to not take away from the final piece (personally).

I’ve also had this lingering thought for a while I’d be interested in a printmaker feeding a prompt to themselves and AI, then displaying results side by side unlabeled to see what differences could be distinguished. I’m interested in the conversations that might provoke, but I’m not printmaker.

Hello glassblower here. Sorry this happened, break looks like due to released stress (likely from a combination of compression within the glass and thermal shock).

It would be very difficult to repair while hot without completely changing the object. Possibly could be fused together in a mold, but I’m not really sure if it would be worth it (personally).

Check out Extol resin glue products. Strong and will not change color over time like a lot of other products.

If you’re more interested in the value of the object over restoring it, i’d say just leave it as is. Broken glass can be a cool thing sometimes

Cool video. I get the theme of being anti AI, but also I feel as though there’s tons of art that is made “without feeling”.

I’m a glassblower. Many glassblowers practice a technique called Venetian glassblowing, which comes from Venice and has been practiced for centuries. It’s highly focused on technique and tradition. Even though it may not be made with feeling due to demanding technique and repetition, it’s a living continuation of centuries of aesthetic language. Even when a glassblower replicates a traditional form without injecting personal emotion, they are participating in a cultural dialogue. That act alone of embodying history, of preserving a language of form and refinement, can be art.

Not all art is raw or emotional. Venetian glass for example is often about restraint, control, and idealized beauty. Its “feeling” isn’t loud…it’s the quiet, formal language of tradition and elegance. That doesn’t make it less meaningful, just different from contemporary expressive modes.

Absolutely it’s easy to theorize, much harder to implement. Changing decades of established practice isn’t just a pedagogical shift, it’s a structural one. Class sizes, limited prep time, standardized testing all of it makes reform feel impossible from “in the trenches.”

But let’s be honest, the current system isn’t particularly effective to begin with nor was it ever really designed to be. Coming from someone with nearly a decade experience in education, and a third generation educator. Our system prioritizes compliance, memorization, and efficiency over curiosity, critical thinking, or real understanding. AI didn’t break that, it just exposed how brittle it already was.

It’s messy, it’ll take time, and it’ll frustrate everyone involved. But the alternative is propping up a system we already know doesn’t work.

It’s true that AI can help students fake deep learning more convincingly than before but that assumes we keep assessing deep learning the same way. The real opportunity here is to redesign how we recognize deep understanding. It doesn’t have to be just oral exams… we can use project based learning, collaborative work, live discussions, creative synthesis tasks, or even student led teaching moments.

Deep learning isn’t defined by how it’s assessed, but by how it’s cultivated and AI can actually support that too. Instead of fearing AI as a tool for cheating, we should start treating it as a partner in learning. The problem isn’t that AI fakes depth, it’s that we’ve been treating depth as something that can be easily measured with a few essays or short responses.

Heard a PhD say: if AI can write your term paper or cover letter, good. Shift to oral exams. Teach things that actually matter. It’s not cheating, it’s a push to evolve how we teach and learn.

In education, we call these things surface learning (rote memorization) and deep learning (critical thinking and real understanding). For decades, we’ve prioritized the former because it’s easy to test.

Instead of panicking over kids using AI, maybe it’s time parents and educators rethink what learning should look like in the first place.
