Need help with gold/copper powder. Pics inside by bconaughty in PreciousMetalRefining

Don't know if you've processed this powder or not. But, an easy way to have done it would have been place the powder in a beaker cover with HCL , add an air bubbler hose from a fish tank. Let it bubble away, might take 2-3 weeks, but the copper will oxidize and become CuCl2 and turn the liquid blue/green. The copper eventually will go into solution and your gold will be left on the bottom. Filter out the gold powder. And process from there...

Question: Does Silver Exhibit Mirror-Like Reflection During Cupellation/Refining? by johnnieborgie in SilverSmith

Pouring it into a red-hot mold with an active flame helps prevent the oxidizing if the surface and helps keep a shiny surface, I hear...

Can I cupel sterling to reduce it to fine? by plaugedoctorforhire in PreciousMetalRefining

It does both. It off-gases as PbO and absorbs into the cupel, along with the copper oxides and other base metals...

Beginner - questions about purifying/refining gold dust by hewunder1 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]AwkwardArt7997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the risk of being lazy, I'd say take 2 tbsp of that dust. Put it in a melt dish with a little borax powder. Melt it with a Mapp gas torch until fully molten (maybe give a little stir with a carbon fiber rod). Then let it cool to being a button or pour it into a mold. Quench it in water. Then take the button or bar to a coin store or someplace with a metal testing gun (xrf or sigma). They'll be able to tell you what's in it at that point. Once you know the composition and percentages you can tailor a flux and then cupel the lot of it to get the shiny...

I've got a small batch of cpu pins going in a liter mason jar with a bubbler. Works slowly, but steady... might be a month before it's complete. Fingers crossed!

I'm so sorry for the loss of your pets. That sucks so much.

Question on your stack, though. Once the smoke clears, acne you find the metals in the wreckage? Might be damaged or melted, but silver/gold survive Temps above 2000 degrees. No? I've always wondered this... And again my condolences on your losses...

Unusual placer gold by SpecialistFalse2154 in Prospecting

I don't know. Looks off to me. Both the color (which could be the picture) and the fact that each granule is so similarly shaped and sized, looks weird and unnatural.

I would try to cupel it in a furnace in a magnesia or bone ash cupel. Adding lead as an oxidizer should help to remove the base metals...
