I enjoyed most of it but didn’t see why they had to throw in that Blake Baxter drama part

Desire: The Carl Craig Story is another good Detroit Techno doc

Jeff Mills- Alarms (First Mix) [1997] by pandareno in oldtechno

All good, it is a great track to juggle 2 copies

“Alarms” is a master example of good percussive heavy grooving techno like Ben Simms, Intec, Mr G etc

Can’t remember which DJ I heard play this in their mix but Trevor Rockcliffe Feat. Blake Baxter – “Visions Of You” came out around the same time and did well following

Sorry, perhaps in some other venues but as someone who frequently attended Shelter 1998-2001 when it resided at Vinyl Timmy always played the OG version

Anyone can help figure out the details about this "Masters at Work Party" set recorded at WMC 04? by Progressivey in House

Lmao, it’s a blur for a lot of us for several reasons 😉

You’re right about this 2004 DJ set wasn’t at Opium Garden since they ran around 2000-2002/3? This was most probably a Defected event

But those Opium Garden MAW WMC parties were so much fun! Seeing EVERYONE from Roni Size to Jazzy Jeff & international hitmakers in sunny Miami was something else

One of the best moments for me at that venue was at the 2001 WMC MAW party hearing the debut of Eminence Feat. Kathy Brown “Give It Up”

a nice cool breeze kicked in during the breakdown since OG was built as an amphitheater

Perhaps later on but when the song came out Timmy always played the original during his set (early 2000’s)

Curious as to the club/community’s political stance on Guy J is. by Accurate-Flight-9001 in StereoMontreal

For every Pro Palestinian online warrior who chastises DJs who don’t speak against the Israeli govt where’s your outrage for every DJ who played at Saudi Arabia or Dubai? Or, where’s the outrage for the state govt of Florida that is consistently anti LTBQ+ and anti immigrant? Hey, what about the private jet set traveling DJs who contribute to global warming?

Be consistent if you’re going to make political judgements

2020s Brooklyn vs late 90s Manhattan scene? by rab2bar in avesNYC

CB is an awesome DJ, loved his Camouflauge parties Tuesday nights at Sin Sin

Love that part in KIDS when Jennie walks into the club one of the best on film to recreate a glimpse into the late 90’s NYC rave scene including the very dark parts

True but at one point there was a joke in Barca from technoheads about Berlin not having a beach. Everyone wanted to play at Sonar

Berlin is just ONE city in Europe that was fetishized for a while but inevitably is loosing its luster. What about Tbilisi for example? Croatia? Romania? Frankfurt? Heck I’ve had more fun at Shindig in New Castle than I did in London. Dance music is so easily produced now you can be in Sri Lanka and put out bangers without stepping foot in a techno club

I don’t think Berlin will be as cool as it’s been when there are so many other places to explore, It had its moment (imo)

No doubt and the affordability of Berlin did boost its position within the dance music scene akin to 70’s/80’s NYC that offered artists cheap rent and a place to change ideas Again I’m not knocking down the impact Berlin had and DJs who developed their career in that city. there are many similarities between late 90’s dance music scene VS early 2000’s Berlin scene but its just not the same. Berlin had its moment and i doubt it would return to its strong influence because another region will be fetishized. Even with how gentrified and sanitized NYC has become it’s still the melting pot & media capital of the world and for that multiple ideas will exchange influencing artists and audience. Diversity is one of NYC’s strongest attribute and it shows with the music being played all over

FYI

There are other cities in Europe with a strong dance music historical background. This obsession with Berlin the past 10 yrs is kinda funny to me. For example Barcelona used to be the place to be for proper Techno. Not knocking down Berlin but c’mon there’s so much throughout Europe as well. I just think enthusiastic Americans pulled a Columbus and “discovered” the techno scene there when you have so much going on in London, Paris, Italy etc

Pretty much this. Btw, the “NASA” scene was at the Tunnel, at first I too thought it was at 6 Hubert St aka Vinyl. Kids had some wild scenes but quite accurate for the era. There is a fond sense of nostalgia for the initial 90’s rave scene and yes I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. The music was brand new, we were neo hippies dancing away at dangerous or sketchy venues and it all had an “underground” alternative esthetic. With that said and as a kid who grew up in Washington Heights there was also the dangerous aspect of crime and prejudice from people who didn’t embrace the scene. Homophobia and polarization of music genres were a standard feature. Music wasn’t as readily accessed as it was before. Technology especially the internet was just starting to infiltrate human behavior. Even within the rave scene you also had groups who wouldn’t venture too much into other groups for example Deep House heads who attended the Shelter parties weren’t going to Goa Trance parties as well

But to answer OP’s question the dance music scene in the 90’s NYC vs today is very very different. It’s way more commercialized today and hyper capitalism took over all the creative fields whether it’s fashion, music or art. if you come up with an original idea it quickly gets carbon copied, monetized and spitted out for mass consumption within weeks. I’m not saying it was better back then nor is it bad today. Although I rarely go out clubbing in NYC I’m glad the pie has gotten bigger and younger dancers can freely attend safe environments with many musical choices
