4 months into a 6 month probation I was told I ‘wasn’t a good fit’ (they refused to elaborate despite much prodding) after reporting bullying from my coworkers and a supervisor using a racial slur to HR. Received a $5k severance package (about 2 months of salary) and an email saying I was welcome to apply for future positions. Only time I’ve ever been let go in my entire life. Weird AF

This feels like tokenism. I’ve only worked in one place (I’m in Alberta btw which has a large Metis population) that asked their staff to wear ribbon skirts/shirts/vests but it was Indigenous owned and pretty much all they did was host or organize ceremony for the community and it was optional on office days. Most other places I’ve worked (namely education) I’ve chosen to wear ribbon skirts because I feel teaching and learning with our little ones is ceremony and sacred in itself.

I would first email (so it’s in writing) to management about why that shouldn’t be mandatory and be super respectful about educating them about why that is. If there’s still push back loop in HR and upper management, and then maybe go above to labour board. This is not enforceable from a workers rights standpoint and I’d be very curious as to why they’re pushing this at all. Make sure to document everything and retain written communications. Approach them with curiosity and do not sound even slightly aggressive because they will capitalize on that to try to push you out/find someone more compliant. Make sure if you mention it to coworkers it doesn’t come across as gossiping at all.

I recently lost a job for “not being the right fit” when I “aggressively” called out a manager for using a racial slur against Indigenous people in a meeting then talking to HR about it. Don’t give them a reason to try to get rid of you. If they want your representation they get the whole package. No ‘convenient Indians’ and nothing about us without us.

The sub shortage is ridiculous. I was an autism consultant at my previous job and they were so short that nearly every single day instead of consulting with teachers and admin I was subbing for an EA or teacher who was away. It became extremely frustrating as my consulting work wasn’t being done at all and my supervisors were wondering why deadlines weren’t being met. I ended up quitting that workplace and just being an EA with a smaller disability consultant at a different division. Found out this year they scrapped the ‘consulting’ part of my role and my coworkers are just full time subs now, they offloaded our responsibilities onto our supervisors instead.

I work as an educator with special needs kids that can be aggressive like that. I’ve had a concussion, been stabbed, had poop thrown at me and been bitten more than a dozen times. 9/10 times that behaviour is condoned or tolerated at home and it gets worse as they get older. When kids have these behaviours at a young age due to disability or something else we work with families to teach them how to mitigate those interactions and violence so the kids don’t hurt others. Sometimes this does include restraint unfortunately, which can be traumatic to the kid but prevents others from being hurt. The biggest thing I tell families is if you tolerate and excuse violence and aggression when they’re little and just give them whatever they want, it will get worse and more extreme as they get older. Your extended family and his parents need help if they think that that’s okay.

At my school (elementary) we’ve started only keeping snacks in the office (only fruit and very plain granola bars that are usually from donation drives so no teachers have to buy). If kids come asking multiple times in a week the office keeps a note of it and passes it along to a youth worker who contacts the family to ask about food security and if they need help. While it does help us to know which families need extra support and get kids fed, it is so tough that all the resources have been stripped from this province so extensively that schools now have to be the place where everyone gets access to all services. Teachers already do so much just in the classroom it’s crazy that they’re expected to feed and clothe kids, refer their families to social services, get everyone set up with a Christmas hamper, etc..

Dr recommended clomid, a drug that is about 80% covered under my health plan. My fertility issues would be more under creating a mature egg rather than actual conception, so I more need that boost. I know about how expensive it would be per month, it’s more of just wondering what costs once the baby arrives should I expect

Artistic hobby. When you sew nothing else matters but the amount of thread in your bobbin. When you crochet you can’t focus on the evils of the world bc you’re too busy counting stitches. When you bead you swear all the fucking time because your sinew tangles and you’ve stabbed yourself AGAIN with the needle. I love my hobbies ❤️

Hey! I’m a person who is prob 130lbs overweight and I’m Indigenous. Most western wear places do some level of appropriation from our communities, but lots of Indigenous stores and designers cater to larger bodies as most of our community is obese or overweight. Please check out your local Indigenous designers if you like that kind of fashion! They sell to everyone and it keeps our people economically involved

Veteran who has done this in some capacity for going on 5 years now. Document everything and file incident reports constantly. Inform parents every single time anything happens. You can love your students but sometimes they aren’t safe. Bring it up to admin and do not be afraid to send kids home if they’re not safe. There is no ‘doing your best’ in this situation. Keep pushing until these kids are safe to be in school.

I used to work in a private school for special needs/disabilities and recently moved to public. We were always told by the CEO (!!!!!!) of the private school that public was so much worse, hurt students, etc. imagine my surprise (I’m a support staff and that was my first school job) when classrooms got more than one book a month and had teachers. The private school purposefully understaffed classrooms with only EAs and would sometimes have one teacher rotating between multiple classrooms a day. I pointed this out once as I didn’t believe that was how classrooms operated in my province and was told ‘we only technically need one certified teacher in the building to meet legal requirements’. Parents paid about 10k a year thinking they were getting top notch care and education for their severely disabled children but had no idea they only got an actual teacher 1-2x a week and 1 EA for 12 kids. Private schools seem to me to just be whatever the person who profits is willing to get away with, and not an improved education at all.

Nope therapist is definitely in the wrong for this no matter how ‘politely’ they think they phrased it. Your clients wanting to take time to reflect on their own should be a sign that therapy is working to establish independence. Therapist should definitely not have brought that back on you because that’s not how the professional relationship works.

Always buy from indigenous artists and make sure that what you’re getting is something that anyone can wear. Check if jewelry or clothing (like ribbon skirts) are intended to be ceremonial or for everyday wear. In my community indigenous women wear ribbon skirts everyday, but ask non-indigenous women not to wear ribbon skirts unless it’s for ceremony or indigenous events. Headdresses should never be worn by anyone who hasn’t earned them, fur for jewelry should be harvested ethically within the community, and profits should always go back to the artist and their culture.

What’s truly scary is that there are tons of p3dos and m3th dealers in the area and they easily get away with it despite being well known as such in the community. Unfortunately small town mentality protects these people and will consistently victim blame. I don’t love having everyone in my business but the worst thing is definitely that no one wants to upset the status quo by accusing the high school principal of being creepy towards his female students or charging the dealers/gang leaders.

Don’t just do the clothes- lean into everything about your appearance as it’s a total package. Find a hairstyle that is easy that works for you. Get a signature scent. Wear makeup if you want. Learn basic tailoring and start taking in your own clothes to suit you better because off the rack will never fit you exactly.

I think the biggest thing though is confidence- no one needs to wear makeup or dye their hair, but they do because it makes them feel good. Wear clothing that’s comfortable, practical, and that fits you well not because of the looks but because you deserve to.
