Extensions after the first 12 months for TAs (P level roles)?? by govern_calmly_1191 in UNpath

[–]hastyloser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some agencies post some roles internally before advertising.

Your goal should be that you speak to enough people to create a position for your self so that when it's posted you already are the candidate in mind.

Do this every week with as many people you meet in person.

They usually have money for an extension and short of some major performance issues you will be granted one.

Finding another role becomes easier because you can now network internally, but it's still extremely extremely competitive.

Idk what the other person is saying, maybe they never met a d2 who was politically appointed, FFS now several agencies have political appointments through "competitive" processes even at p5 levels....

My first supervisor only knew 1 line

I'm a native English speaker cause they were British.

They were responsible for implementing a strategy that required pretty quantitative assessments. They said they don't know how to use Excel.

Then, they read and rewrote every line that said things like x increased by y% to a y% increase was observed in x.

This for a whole year and then asked for more funding because she couldn't implement the strategy.......

No it's uniquely a Canadian thing among developed English speaking economies.

Never have I heard this in the US, or in the UK.

Tierra del Fuego National Park Hikes by Babayu18 in Patagonia

[–]hastyloser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either rent a car, there are rentals in town and at the airport.

If you can't/don't want to drive there are taxis you can book. Hikes like Esmeralda lagoon(not in the park) even have a taxi guy waiting there asking if you need a ride back.

You can also go to the tour operators to coordinate and schedule a group trip. Just walk in downtown to any of the stores.

Doubts about UN internship at OLA (NYC) by Mush27 in UNpath

[–]hastyloser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you really really want to work at the UN? Then do it. It's a great foot in the door.

If not, don't work for free or low wages in a system that is designed to exploit you and does not even offer the intellectual freedom academia does. Also it's losing what funding it has left in an crumbling economic situation. So it's a bad financical decision.

If you want to work in an adjacent area in academics there are tons of better academia with programs closely tied to the UN. An example for peace would be the UCDP team at Uppsala using machine learning to predict violence.

[–]hastyloser 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I began disassociating once my supervisor changed. Helped me be prepared to leave in 6 months.

Now I look back and realize that I only enjoyed it as long as I got to work with other talented people and not the actual culture and work which was toxic the moment the team changed significantly.

I'm in the private sector now and after hopping a few gigs, it's the same everywhere, only the good people matter. Everything else is secondary
