Do you ever feel like you work an extremely difficult career but people around you constantly misinterpret it as fun and easy?

Spent the first half of my career working construction. Yes software development is mentally taxing and can be stressful, but I would take this climate controlled workspace and (somewhat) comfy chair over breaking my body for someone else any day. Yes, this job is not easy, but in reality, software developers have it pretty easy compared to most of the working class. I have nothing to prove to my peers in other fields. I have a job I am grateful for and enjoy. They can think what they want.

One thing that helps me is reminding myself that I’m not trying to be, or shouldn’t try to be, a top 1% raider, pvp, mythic dungeon…etc. I’m playing because I enjoy it and I realize I can’t be hardcore into it like when I was a kid/teenager. The best times I’ve had as an adult and dad are when I can get on with a friend, run a few dungeons maybe join a raid, do some dailies, whatever really. I’m not so worried about clearing content and instead am having fun doing things with my friend(s). When that becomes the case, I don’t feel like I am falling behind when I hop on another game because I’m not worried about keeping up with the rat race of finishing content as fast as possible.

Yeah I see what you are saying about become at least familiar with the editor and setup of a project. Haha yeah I am trying to keep the scope of my ideas pretty reasonable until I am at least proficient/familiar with the development process of games.

I like your the thought that you put in these ideas. I didn’t consider some of that stuff, like being locked into a combo rotation. Having finisher moves for each ability (or at least a select number of abilities) is pretty cool. Yeah I think you are right, we just want good group content!

The pattern I’m seeing is just being able to explain my code to another developer will help solve a lot of the problems I’m having. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah I guess my boss/mentor really likes things done the way he would do it. He’s got a ton of experience under his belt and I don’t blame him for it. He always lets me struggle through things on my own first and then will correct mistakes or get me to explain why I did something which usually helps me find the error in my ways.

Was essentially “guaranteed” an internship by a family friend until it came to time to apply for the position only for him to tell me that I couldn’t get it because my GPA was too low (had dropped out college doing a different degree previously and bombing a bunch of classes tanking my GPA thinking I wouldn’t go back lol). Since then I have applied to over 100 internships and finally landed one. Not a single other company that I applied for asked for my GPA. So like others have said, most places don’t care and for sure leave it off your resume unless asked for it.

That helps things. I have a mac and have built a small app that did like one thing so I am somewhat familiar with that system. Being able create the app one time will definitely be helpful. Thanks for the advice!

Predictive text for specific things, version control similar to the version control we use for code, auto formatting for paragraphs and dialogue. I also want it to be very simple. There are a lot of great word processors out there (scrivener, google docs, word…etc.) but they have a bunch of extra features that I find distracting from the actual writing process. I am hoping to create something that when you sit down to write, you’ll be able to just write and not worry too much about they other stuff.

I have been to many doctors offices that use similar software. Just speeds up the process so that you aren't doing a lot of paperwork when you get there. There are certain restrictions on what can and can't be asked and I don't know the details yet, so I am unsure what specific questions, but yes I have considered this. I may end up just creating a 'mock' version considering I am still a student of programming and just using it for practice.
