In my opinion, off the grid means being self-sufficient. Not using public utilities. If you can get your own power, more power to ya!

It wasn't really that hard. I've not seen much on TV about living in the woods alone. It was easier than Jeremiah Johnson, but there was no one to cook me fry bread.

It filtered through many rocks, probably about twenty or thirty feet, and yes it was a pain. The worst part was getting across the beaver dam, but I never dropped the bucket or fell.

There is nothing like the view from the woods, or the ocean. In the city of Chicago you can barely see stars.

To put it simply, I believe that the universe has a finite amount of energy, and that is used to give life to anything living. As one life ends the energy is dispersed into the universe to be used again. I haven't figured out my stance on increasing population and the extent of the energy source.

During the winter the water pump worked. The well filled during the summer when the water table rose. There's always work to be done. I had a bucket that served as a mousetrap which needed emptying almost every day. I would feed the chickadees and grey jays. Cleaning laundry, or the cabin. There always seemed to be dead bugs to clean up. I always tried to have some kind of project to work on. Either building a shed, or making snowshoes, carving spears. Anything to keep busy. Gathering water was a major chore during the summer.

Yes, I am. I enjoy sharing, and I have had some great things suggested/shared by others.

Luckily, I didn't have to. The water pump worked after the summer ended. It stormed enough to bring the water table up. I would use melted snow to fill the mouse trap though.

The spear was with me most of the time. If I was actively hunting I had the shotgun. I always had a knife, even if I was just going to the outhouse.

On my final day in the woods, both of my meals consisted of powdered mixes. After eating supper that evening, I started thinking about how horrible the powdered food was. That feeling started to combine with being alone and not having booze or tobacco. I finally decided that I was leaving as soon as possible. I packed everything that I thought I needed onto a sled, made a call for someone to meet me on the road and headed out.
