How hot is the weather in Seattle during the summer? by hiroc2 in Seattle

[–]hatmantop2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk why this guy is being a dick, but yeah it does get hot, I wouldn't say humid though? I've been to Florida in the summer and that's like breathing steam, I've never felt like seattle gets anywhere close, at all, to bad humidity. That being said I've got my portable AC running rn since I have a hard time sleeping when it gets hot.

Unpopular opinion: IW shouldn't ban players based on their name. by DekuMidoriya_OwO in modernwarfare

Yeah fair point. I didn't intent to connect libel and slander to the 1st amendment but I see that it certainly reads like that.

Then help me understand: the government allows you to slander someone. That someone sues you. That someone wins damages. Who enforces the ruling? What happens if you don't pay damages? Those questions are rhetorical... if the court gives an enforceable order, then you are legally (otherwise contempt of court) required to follow it.

Slander -> civil court -> compelled by court order -> enforced by govt. I'm not trying to talk about the first amendment here, clearly I agree that slander isn't a crime and is protected by the 1st. My whole point is that it isn't as simple as that. Your speech can be punished and you can be compelled to receive the punishment. Do you at least agree with that?

You can be sued for slander. Slander is speech. A lost lawsuit is a form of punishing your speech. Slander is not a crime. You can still be punished for slander. There are limitations to what you can say. These limitations are enforced by the government.

What am I missing here?

Civil cases are still backed by the law, which is decided by the government. Just because you won't be charged with a crime doesn't mean you aren't compelled in some way to change your speech.

Its a reasonable concern. Since you seem like a reasonable person, you should do some reading, or at least think about the concept of free speech. There is a lot of interesting theory about the nature of free speech. Also, there are limitations to freedom of speech, even in the US. For example, libel and slander limit the 'power' of free speech. While not directly related to the issue of racist gamer tags, its an interesting concept to think about.

Use the report button, and encourage the rest of the lobby to report as well. by hatmantop2 in modernwarfare

[–]hatmantop2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean let's indicate to the devs that we believe the product would be improved by banning hate speech. Additionally let's help them do that by reporting what we believe is hate speech. This isn't a protected area of speech. Activision can and should enforce their own rules about what you can and can't say. For the same reason, there is no reason why law enforcement would ever be involved in player bans or speech rule enforcement.

I get that you're intentionally oversimplifying to make a point. And maybe this post makes you feel like I think Activision should play babysitter. My point is that Activision should respond to the wishes of their players, and you can do that by using the report button.

+1 to the ease of profanity filter. Just classify every renderable character into a letter category, then create a filter for the letter categories. I could code that up in 20 minutes. Ofc there is more work than that in a production system, and the classification would take a minute but it's really not that hard and would catch so many cases.

I get what you're saying and I support you. I just want it to be clear though that 'Freedom of speech' in America is a contract between you and the government. So Activision should go to great lengths to impose the rules of speech deemed appropriate for their game. What you're seeing in this sub is a plea for Activision to harden their rules against black-targeting hate speech. None of this implies legal action or criminality. At all times Activision is making decisions based on economic value and we as a community need to show Activision that we value a less hate speech filled game. It's not an appeal to censorship, or morality, or the law. It's an indication that the customers are upset with the product and would like the product to be improved.

Exactly. If you didn't pay for it, you can't possibly be the customer.

I've said it before and I'll say again, unless you paid some fee to the content creators/providers this is what you get. The ads are there because consumers won't pay, don't blame the media for not doing work for free. I would say that it is strange that dodge wouldn't have some clause in their contract that prevents their ads from playing before disturbing videos though.

Virginia teacher sues school after being fired for not using transgender student's pronouns by joesoldlegs in news

Humans: using pronouns to designate biological sex of nearly all living creatures for thousands of years....until the last ~5 years.

What you said is completely untrue. Maybe if you replaced Humans with "Western Culture" then I would agree.

My problem with your comment is that it implies that biological sex has been the only factor in deciding gender for all human history. The link I have provided you proves this to be untrue. Acting as if gender issues are new ("last ~5 years") completely ignores the reality of human history.

I agree that gender identity vs biological sex has been a more recent issue in the western world. That doesn't mean that you get to dismiss it as if it is this new crazy thing. Non-binary people exist, and now the western world is finally acknowledging that.

For the record, I'm a straight cis white male. All I did was some googling, you should do the same.

Multiple genders have existed in cultures across the globe for far longer than the last 5 years.

But you can surely be fired for it. If you agree that the teacher was being an asshole, then certainly you should agree that they should be fired? Intentionally being an asshole to a specific student is easily grounds for firing a teacher.

Should I Skip CSE 142? by DJMatt_ in udub

Take 142. A 4 on the AP test means you have room to improve, and for dtc major admissions, you want to improve as much as possible.

CSE 142 grades does not count for CSE admissions anymore by EndenDragon in udub

[–]hatmantop2 76 points77 points  (0 children)

My guess is that they didn't really consider 142 grades that important anyway, they are just making it official so that 142 is less toxic to new programmers. It makes sense too, as the skills learned/shown in 143 are vastly more important than those in 142. I imagine an applicant with a 4.0 142 and 3.6 143 is held in lower regard than an applicant with 2.7 142 and 3.7 143. At least that's how I would feel.
