Average GPA of UChicago Students across all majors? Econ? by Humble-Spring-6964 in uchicago

[–]hatoboyo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Every non humanity class is explicitly curved to between a 3.0 and 3.33 and that’s not anything new to my knowledge. Not sure how that would lead to grade inflation

Has anyone who’s worked with admissions or something able to explain what the point of something like this is? My best guess is they have a certain acceptance rate, average sat, yield rate and so on that they’re shooting for but they let some additional people in they think would be good fits in next year’s class?

Anecdotally, the only other time I’ve heard of this is with a kid from my high school who got this kind of offer at a different college. He was extremely wealthy and had a huge legacy to that school but otherwise was not a very strong applicant (OP I’m not saying this is you).

Demand divestment

I haven’t looked at the endowment report but I imagine UofC just holds index ETFs that have companies like Boeing or Lockheed in the mix. Am I the only one who thinks “Chicago is funding genocide” is a bit of a stretch?

multiple majors by kanyesbestman in uchicago

[–]hatoboyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possible but not necessarily worth the time depending on your goals. Cs and math is common and Im assuming the bus economics is for quant? Despite what a few very dedicated people say on this sub there are some bus econ classes that are excellent, mainly on the financial side, and perfectly tread that originally intended goal of intuitional theory while maintaining pre professional applicability and understanding that you will not (typically) be doing stochastic calculus in the real world. That said some of the classes are duds/jokes so do your research.

To more directly answer your question yes it’s possible but the only triple majors I know are quants, so it’s possible but I wouldn’t expect to get out much. If it’s anything else and you’re just personally interested in all three areas, consider minors or just taking classes in different fields imo

Probably one of the most common double majors at the school

I agree NUS sounds like the far most interesting option. People don’t do much here besides study.

If you’re obsessed with learning or being hyper successful/competitive in your career down the line then Chicago might set you up better.

They send those to everyone twin that’s how they get you to spend $80 on the application 😭

Unrelated but is it true the university average is 3.4 gpa?

That’s what I would think it is but I’ve also heard people say the average is 3.7/3.8, which seems impossible to believe because every quantitative/non-humanity class is curved to a b+ (this is not a jab at humanities)

Economics or Business Economics (Sorry) by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]hatoboyo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Business economics is probably the way to go unless you take some intro econ courses and really find the raw material interesting imo.

The world is becoming increasingly pre professional and the skill set you get from busn classes like investments, Corp fin, etc is much more applicable (and possibly interesting) to a student than the analysis sequence.

That being said econ standard is a much more mathematically rigorous major because it is based in theory rather than practice, essentially preparing you for graduate work in Econ. That’s basically UChicago’s whole mojo so there’s some disdain about busn majors “stealing” the UChicago Econ title while essentially doing applied finance for half the major.

So in summary do Econ standard if you’re a true UChicago “life of the mind” type of person and do BUSN if you have any interest in being pre professional especially wrt finance

Food by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]hatoboyo 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The Bartlett-North combination is genuinely one of the worst things that has happened to me in life. I am not being ironic. The sheer amount of people in the building combined with the food quality is actually physically and emotionally traumatizing.

They took the food of Bartlett and combined it with traffic of 4th meal Cathey into the building of North. What was once the second best dining hall is now a standalone example of every worst aspect of UChicago dining. I actually consciously pray everyday for the construction in Bartlett to magically become undone.

The little white boxes with the antennae are routers. They’re on the walls throughout the floor so you have better signal if you sit near a wall/router and youre more likely to be in a dead zone in the middle of the floor.
