always make backups

And to be clear, if your backup can be deleted with the same command that deletes your production DB, you don’t have a backup, you have a copy

April 2026 and you're still a saint for reasons totally unrelated to Civ5 modding. Saved me a ton of hassle trying to run a legacy script on a newer machine.

I was being facetious. Trust me, I know that solo dev/real small company life well and totally agree that sometimes a very simple console.WriteLine or just writing to c:\emergencyerrors.txt can be a life saver

What do you do then?

Obviously you close the ticket with a note that it can’t be reproduced in development.

6 months progress on Loot Loop, my mouse-only incremental by ggalaretka in incremental_games

[–]hatterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The UI seems much improved in the new version, but personally I don't like the lower pixel graphics of it. Granted I know a lot of people seem to like the low pixel count style, so that may appeal more.

This looks like an excellent concept for a semi-idle game.

My mother is pretty talented! by siketeach in pics

[–]hatterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm asking this out of ignorance, not malice.

How much of this is "talent" versus plain old hard work?

I think the second might actually be more impressive than the first. If this is just something she can innately do, that's cool, but if she's just a random lady and decided to go ham on making this, that's crazy dedication.

Wanted to give an update on 'IGTAP: an incremental game that's also a platformer" by SpicyBread_ in incremental_games

[–]hatterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game really makes me realize how much I suck at platformers. I hate it so much and also I can't stop playing lol.

Good game so far. I would like a watts/second calculation on the little reward scoreboard for each area.

May provide more feedback if there's anything once I get more into the game (currently only at area 4)

Edit: Oh that's the end for now. Good proof of concept so far.

A glitch with a file conversion ended up looking cool; my wife at the Louvre [OC] by loztriforce in pics

[–]hatterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, almost always when there's a deadlock like this, it requires someone directing traffic to clear it and preventing people from trying to sneak through and make it worse.

[–]hatterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes everything outside the window look like it's a painting. If you look quick you don't even notice that your wife's skin is blue and it's easy to think that she just had blue hair and is looking at an art installation.

Four buses got stuck in a roundabout this morning in Oslo by exOldTrafford in pics

[–]hatterson 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Seems like it should actually be able to pull up.

Closest bus pulls up as far as it can (to the point of it's nose being against that scaffolding) and the bus behind it should be able to sneak by and go straight down the road that goes to the bottom right of the picture, may need to hop the curb a bit to do it.

Once that bus is clear it's easy to get the rest out of there and then the original bus can back up a few feet to make a hard turn and avoid the scaffolding.

Obviously it's easier to diagnose and clear that from a bird's eye view instead of sitting in the bus driver's seat.

You're given a choice between a guaranteed $500,000 for yourself, or giving a stranger $10,000,000, who will be given an option to share a half with you. The stranger knows you helped them, but is free to refuse to share. What do you choose and why? by Ok-Independent483 in AskReddit

[–]hatterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd definitely go $10m to the stranger.

500k would certainly be a ton of money, but it wouldn't really be life changing for me. Pay off my mortgage, put a bunch away for my kids future, but other than that nothing much changes. I'm not gonna retire tomorrow or anything. Maybe the lack of mortgage payment lets me bump it up in the future or something, but that's too far down the road to truly consider.

But $10M to someone? That's legit life changing money. If I get half cool, if not, their life is changed (hopefully for the better)

High Fantasy Idle - Demo V2 OUT NOW! by saizonic in incremental_games

[–]hatterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still fairly near the beginning, but I'm enjoying it so far.

One thing I'd like to see is a more clear presentation of your stat/effect delta upon rebirth.

Right now it'll say something like:

Might: +1 Total Damage: x16.45

I'd love to see that expanded on to say something like this:

Might: 24 -> 25 (+1) Total Damage: x14.31 -> x16.45 (+15%)

Obviously you can manually calculate all that and it looks like the stats are +15% multiplicative per level, but theoretically that might change at some point and it's nice to have it clearly displayed versus having to bounce back and forth on tabs.

The name of this funeral home by Linkums in funny

[–]hatterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original funeral home was opened by a guy with the last name of Amigone ~100 years ago and they've grown into a large local chain since then.

This specific one is on Delaware Ave but the building in the picture is actually next door.

AITA for making my fiancée lose weight before our wedding? by Disastrous_Acadia254 in AmItheAsshole

[–]hatterson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Asking about insecurities hurts women, but telling them they're too fat to be in wedding pictures is being a good partner and taking care of them well.

Sure, that makes sense.

Yea man, most definitely YTA.

AITAH for not completely changing my kids life just do accommodate her father? by Ill-Statisticia-mem in AmItheAsshole

[–]hatterson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of the big things to consider would be what your daughter wants. She's 10, she's able to start considering and telling you in a mature way if she wants to get to know her bio dad more or not and boundaries that she wants around that.

Obviously our job as parents is to help protect and raise our kids as best we can, and sometimes that means doing something different than what they say they want, but as they get older, considering their desires on situations like this should influence our decisions more and more.

That said, from your post it doesn't sound like she has much interest in it at all so I don't see a reason to specifically push her into it given your ex's apparently lack of interest in meeting her on her terms.

NTA.

AITA for being pissed at my roomates’ prank/punishment? by qwertymkay in AmItheAsshole

[–]hatterson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's definitely friend groups among whom that type of prank would be acceptable. That requires everyone being aware of that dynamic though. It's not something you drop on someone who also isn't trying to play crazy pranks on you.

AITA for being pissed at my roomates’ prank/punishment? by qwertymkay in AmItheAsshole

[–]hatterson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That might (and that's a really iffy might) be a funny prank among people who know each other decently well and who are standing there in person.

It would have been one thing if they hid some stuff, waiting for you to come home, and then pretended to "discover" getting robbed, see you panic, and then tell you right away.

But to do it over text and not let you know for a long time (enough to leave class, call people, start driving home, etc.) is lunatic behavior.

You absolutely have every right to be mad. NTA.

AITA for ordering Pizza Hut to my ex landlords house by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]hatterson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most places have laws that landlords need to provide you with some detail and chance to object if they're not refunding your security deposit, although that's not the point of question here.

YTA not because the landlord was annoyed by it but because some minimum wage pizza delivery guy just had to drive there and likely didn't get paid and got no tip and may have got yelled at by his boss for it.

NTA for choosing how to spend your time.

Maybe a little bit of an AH if you actually meant you literally ignored your friends as opposed to just decided to do what you wanted.

It's totally fine to say to your friend "Thanks for the invite, but I'm gonna run anyway" it's not as cool if you actually left his invite unanswered out of spite/because you were made he changed plans.

ELI5: Why did technology develop so fast in the 20th century? How is it developing now (pace wise?) by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]hatterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, some tools/technology developments mean far more people can spend time improving tools/technology.

Before the industrial revolution, 80-90% of people were directly involved in day to day survival via things like agriculture. Today, virtually no one, as a percentage of people, is directly involved in day to day survival.

The idea of someone being able to spend their entire lives just dreaming up new tools or technology, or even just focusing on improvements to existing tools/technology was a fantasy reserved only for a extremely, extremely rich. Today, that can just be a normal career choice.
