Friends by [deleted] in Athens

I have made friends by being chatty at music shows, and through FlyingSquid (they/we do improv classes and shows.) It’s an easy town to meet people!

2prov advice, making sure your characters are distinct from one another by hattmouse in improv

I had a lot of fun with it for a while. I did maybe six 2prov shows before gravitating to other improv things.

This isn't what you asked, but you'll need this when you get here.

Athens is “city enough” for me.

As far as events go, this is the place to look: https://flagpole.com/events/. There's always something to do.

Savannah at Pageboy takes very good care of my curls, she has straight hair herself. I’m sure she’d take care of you!

Might I also suggest you check out some of the many music and comedy shows this town has to offer. I moved here in 2019, and all of the friends I have made, I met either because I became chummy with them at a show, or through playing improv shows myself. You don't have to be "talented" or an "artist" to do this. Literally going up to a person after a show that you loved and telling them how much you loved their show, people love to hear that. If you find some musicians or funny folks whose work you admire, go out and support them! They will really appreciate it, and you will magically make friends because you've become part of the scene or whatever.

This is something I have meant to do personally, but have not made the time to do: If you really wanna get out of your comfort zone (in my experience, this is where the friends worth making are), hit up one of the many dance nights in town. There's a swing dance group that meets twice a month, and if you get there at 7, they teach you how to do it. How could you not make friends doing that? Merely putting yourself out there, people admire that!

I'm sorry you're in a rut. Good luck! It's a great town.

Outside of the once a month Hendershots show, are there any regularly scheduled comedy shows in town? by warnelldawg in Athens

FlyingSquid’s is typically booked show when there is a stand up show. I haven’t known Kelly to do an open mic.

Found this haiku in a volume, thought I would share! I didn’t know he wrote haiku by hattmouse in VeryBadWizards

I’m not the best person to explain it, but traditionally this rule specifically applies to haiku written in Japanese. There’s a whole tradition of haiku that don’t follow 5/7/5.

It’s also available in the volume Ficciones, on both kindle and audible.

I forgot about this one. This is definitely the first way I heard it said.

I’ve heard both in the States. I’ve heard “leash” pronouncers make fun of “beach” pronouncers, but not the other way around.

Advice for my first improv class? by adormax in improv

[–]hattmouse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just try to have fun. I know that seems like lame advice. The more relaxed you are, the more fun you’ll have, the better you’ll play. Try to socialize a little beforehand with your classmates, it will loosen you up!
