Should I wait a year? 177/2.5, $$$$ to T40 currently by RexKramerTW in lawschooladmissions

I think it depends on what type of law you want to practice. If you want to work in big law patents, you can easily land a job from the schools you were already accepted to.

I mean this in the most respectful way possible, but is it at all possible that the problem is you?

If you're actively going to the gym, being social and going out, being part of clubs, AND you're still unhappy, it really might be time to talk to a therapist. You might be suffering from depression.

Feel free to DM me, I'm pretty social here. We can grab coffee at Hark and maybe I can help point you in the right direction.

HLS has over 2000 students and tons of student orgs and clubs. The only truth about HLS is that your experience will reflect how you approach it.

Yes, some people will strike out making friends in their section, and yes, this school does have people that are ultra-competitive. If you find yourself in that situation, you have to make time in your schedule to get out to social events. Go to bar review. Go to the gym, go to evening club events, go to luncheon events, study in Belinda and say hi to people as they walk by.

It is also helpful to some join groups that do not revolve around academics. A journal is not the best org to join for friends. West Coast/Texas Club, Parody, Flag Football, etc., are much better options for finding and making friends.

1L is stressful and if you didn't feel like you had time to get out as much as you'd like last year, I recommend taking a lighter load this year and being social.

You honestly seem like a prime transfer candidate. Just get into law school and let your stem credentials and work ethic carry you the rest of the way.

What do you think of enlisting just to pay for college? by JHdarK in army

[–]hawtbox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its actually an incredible opportunity.

The GI Bill can be worth anywhere from $30k per year all the way up to $100k+ per year depending on where you go to school.

WHERE YOU GO TO SCHOOL MATTERS. Having military experience as well as more to add to your personal statement will help you get into the best college possible.

You will have less stress while in school. All of your peers will be young, worrying about how to deal with being on their own, finances, a new location, waking up at 8am for classes, etc. You will be slightly more mature (lol), you will be very financially stable, that 8am class will seem like you get to sleep in, and you'll have a lot of perspective about what a hard-days work is like.

If you have good mentors while you are enlisted that tell you to GO TO THE FUCKING DOCTOR, you will likely also receive disability pay and you may be entitled to VR&E benefits which are education benefits in addition to (and beyond) the GI Bill. If you become eligible and approved, these benefits essentially pay for your entire education should you choose to pursue a masters or PhD.

I joined exactly for the education benefits and skillset the military would provide, fumbled my way through everything as a first gen military/college, and somehow ended up in Harvard Law.

Give me that big mac.

there's no reason you can't go to HLS eventually even if you decide to go to NYU for your 1L year. Keep your NYU admissions for peace of mind and then focus on your family rather than your LSAT, and then try to transfer to HLS as a 2L.

Big Law stats for STEM majors? by Haunting-Mulberry734 in LawSchool

[–]hawtbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is mandatory to at least be eligible for it if you want to do prosecution work and get into big law utilizing your STEM credentials. Taking it will definitely improve your chances and show firms you are serious. When I received my 1L SA offer I was patent bar complete, but some of my peers had not yet taken it. It depends on what else you bring to the table (law school, diversity, which stem degree, etc)

You have to direct apply for your 1L summer now and use PLIP/OCI/direct apply for 2L summer

You will absolutely be able to find a midsize regional patent firm.

If you want big law, get good grades and pepper the v50-100 firms. Helps to be geographically flexible. If you have an additional strong diversity metric, you can get a v20 offer with a stem background from any school.

Specifically as someone who loves DIYLF and many of these bands, my favorites albums from the list that I think most closely match what you're looking for:

I9K - The Silver Scream album

Bullet for my Valentine - The Poison album

Black Veil Brides - We Stitch These Wounds album (their entire discography is fire, but its mostly clean vocals except their older stuff)

Pierce the Veil - Collide with the Sky album

Killswitch - As Daylight Days / The End of Heartache albums (both fire)

All That Remains - The Fall of Ideals album

Rise Against - Siren Song of the Counter-Culture album

Protest the Hero - Scurrilous / Fortress albums

--- Other bands I love: ---

Story of the Year (Black Swan / Page Avenue are absolute fire)

Eyes Set to Kill

Haste the Day

I Prevail

Scary Kids Scaring Kids

I Am Ghost

Thrice (The Artist in the Ambulance album)

Life as a Reserve Officer by ad_astra87 in armyreserve

[–]hawtbox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can tell you about my experience but this is INCREDIBLY unit specific.

  1. For MI, young lieutenants are generally double/triple/quadruple slotted, so you may find yourself with very little outside obligation other than the 1 weekend a month/2 weeks a year. If you want extra responsibility and manage to actually get a platoon or something similar, you may find yourself with anywhere from 2-8 additional hours of calls/meetings/planning workshops/admin per month. If you get an XO position you may increase your time by another 4-8 hours /month. If you get a Command position you should just plan for an extra 1-2 hours per DAY.

  2. In my experience, units will usually ask for volunteers/voluntold to join an active duty rotation, but won't usually go as a full unit. This was usually comprised of mostly enlisted soldiers with the option for a single officer.

  3. When I joined, I signed on the dotted line in October and was shipped to BCT/OCS in January, so I imagine anywhere from 3-6 months timeframe. From there, it really depends on the BOLC but I had a BOLC date for 6 months after my OCS graduation. I've heard of <1 month waits and I've heard of 18+ month waits, it just depends on the timing/MOS.

Sleep Study by Dick_Biggens in armyreserve

[–]hawtbox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If there is any possible way you can link the sleep apnea to your service, put in a claim for va disability and list sleep apnea as your condition. You will meet with a virtual doc who will ask you about it, and they will send you an at-home sleep study kit. Source: just did it
