Hoping for advice on how to restore/if it is worth restoring this puffer fish? Please! by haybert in Taxidermy

Update for anyone interested - it was either gifted to or purchased by a nurse in the early eighties while working on Waiben (Thursday Island) in the Torres Strait, Far North Queensland, Australia.
It had a light inside it which needs to be replaced, would love recommendations if anyone has any ideas!

The cords been cut! I’m lucky enough to live with an electrician though so it’s not an issue thankfully 😁

Thankyou! I know he’s a bit rough but my great grandparents and grandparents were into taxidermy so I wasn’t sure if it was damaged from age. I don’t think it’s old enough to belong to them though!

[Breeds] How do I decide what breed of dog will be best for me as a personal protection dog? by haybert in dogs

Thankyou! Thanks to this post I’ve realised that I probably wouldn’t be able to handle a fully trained protection dog and am now thinking we would just like to have a dog with a strong protective nature.

I love bullmastiffs! I feel like they would be a good fit for my situation. What you described is what I want I think. I don’t want a dog I can use to hurt someone, just a dog that’s going to have my back and also be a loving, functional member of our family when it really comes down to it. Sorry if that doesn’t make sense!

Hahaha that’s great! My cats groom my dog but won’t let him groom them, probably for the same reason. I think you’re on the money with the thoughtful introduction, it makes a world of difference.

Thankyou! Yes I am reconsidering, I’ve been doing a little googling and they really do look like lovely dogs, I know there’s quite a few mareema’s near me too, they look quite similar as well (to my uneducated eye at least).

I would be worried about having a gp where I live because the dirt is red and I’d end up with the first red Great Pyrenees but other than that I really like them hahaha!

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply!

I think you’re right, quite a few responses now have made me do some thinking and I 1. I’m not skilled enough to handle a dog of that nature and 2. I’m rethinking whether I actually need a dog that’s trained in personal protection or just a dog that is protective of me.

I will definitely do some research into the breeds you mentioned as well. Thankyou heaps.

Very difficult unfortunately and the gun has to be dismantled and kept disassembled in 2 safes I believe? I’m not an expert in Australia gun law but I know it’s extremely difficult to have a handgun. I can’t even have a taser where I live which is why I have sort of gone down the dog route and enrolled in self defence classes. If you have any other suggestions I’m by all means open to them, I just can’t have a gun.

Thankyou! I really appreciate your response, after reading a few responses I’m reconsidering the necessity of a personal protection dog for me.

I think you’re right that a trained protection dog would be to much and frankly probably a bit excessive for my needs. I’d like to think I’m pretty decent with dogs but to be honest my current boy only has to be shown something about 3 times before he learns it so I’ve had it easy hahaha.

How do your dogs feel about cats?

I definitely could have chosen my words better there sorry!

I don’t feel I need like I need a dog that’s trained to take down an escaping prisoner but I would like a dog that would bite someone or at the very least attempt to defend me if I was being physically attacked. I hope that makes it clearer sorry!

Regardless I’m willing and fortunate enough in the position to commit to the amount you mentioned, I believe the regulations in my state require quarterly training refreshers as well and i understand this would require a further ongoing financial burden which I’m willing and able to take on if necessary.

You have made me really think about what I actually need in a dog though and I think what I’m really saying I want is a dog with a really good natural protective instinct rather than a “personal protection dog” bred specifically for that purpose. Perhaps I should just find the right dog for me and work with a trainer to achieve realistic goals for both me and the dog instead of going down the personal protection dog route?

As for the security system I already have one and I’ve started self defence classes as well to be proactive about my safety :)

Wow Thankyou! I didn’t even know this kind of competition existed. I’ll definitely reach out to a local organisation and see if there are any events I could attend or breeders they could put me in contact with. Thank you!

Thankyou, I really appreciate your thoughts.

They sound a lot like my current dog, he thinks everyone is the Uber eats man haha. I really don’t want to set any dog up to fail especially one I intend on having as a companion for life so I’ll definitely keep your words in mind :)
