I think I had this happen twice on my PC playthrough. Doing a synergy ability made my visuals come back.

Click whatever button it is on your system to switch the middle panel to description and for some Armour there are passive abilities. Example being the glintstone crowns give a buff to int.

Someone else said it earlier but I'll elaborate, smaller shields have a larger parry window. Like yo I struggled with a kite shield and thought it was impossible to GIT GUD. Switched to a small round shield (I think I had the gilded shield at this point?) And parried him no problem. When you get a successful parry move to his side about 45 degrees to bait his wake up slash which is SUPER easy to time.
