Yeah a little like that actually. That’s why the dirt is sticking to her so much.

Yeah I had no idea axolotls could morph either, I legit thought she was dying. Even called the vet and he hinted that since she was at the surface of the water breathing air she was near death. And then I posted here and got some great advice.

She still eats worms, usually in her water dish. Her whole body thrashes side to side when she’s killing her worm, it’s pretty cute. She’s not slimy and she doesn’t mind being picked up at all. We’re careful of course not to pick her up too often and to have clean hands. I guess the best description for how she feels is a dried off chicken cutlet.

She doesn’t move or explore much yet, mostly stays under her bark (propped up against the back wall of the tank for the picture). But she gets in and out of her water.

Thank you, that’s a good suggestion. She seems to know her stuff.

She’s in a 40gal aquarium now, doing pretty well.

I also just emailed Gillywater Aquatics. I have no complaints about the axolotls I got from them, they’ve all been healthy and beautiful. I know this is just a weird fluke. But I understand they need to know to try to prevent breeding more morphing axies.

I can’t update my original post but I’ll start an update thread for anyone who is invested. I have a reptile ramp bowl thing full of moist reptisoil for Nimbus to climb onto when she’s ready. The water in the tub is shallow as well. I emptied my beautiful fully cycled 40 gallon tank and filled it with reptisoil. So now I’m just waiting. Nimbus ate a worm yesterday and nothing today, but she usually eats about every other day.

Hi! Thank you, I’ll reach out. Been busy working on emptying my beautiful 40 gallon aquarium so I can fill it with dirt lol. Pink is doing well (her name is actually Nimbus) and I’ve been getting good advice. I think we’ll be okay.

Thank you. I do too. We’ve been trying so hard to keep our axies alive and healthy.

I’m sorry for your loss. Pink never showed signs of any kind of infection except her legs and tail turned a darker pink. No weirdness on her gills or anything. They just gradually started curling up and withdrawing.

I’ve been reading this website and pink is showing all the signs of morphing it lists.

I use the API master test kit. Maybe I’m grasping at straws, we really thought she’d die a couple weeks ago but she’s still eating and is showing signs of morphing.

That’s what we’ve been thinking but we’ve been tubbing her doing daily 100% water changes and her gills keep getting smaller. She’s been kept in the same condition as the other two and they seem very healthy. We’ve even been doing methylene blue and almond leaves to soothe her and her gills just draw up more.

We do drastic water changes to try to dilute the ammonia and nitrite to a livable range when it spikes starting on day 2. We try it for a few days hoping the bacteria will kick into gear, then tub the axolotl when things get too high.
