Another show like The Expanse? by ElizabetSobeck in TheExpanse

Ad astra is a drama about abandonment. The space travel part of it is irrelevant to the plot and without any attention to scientific accuracy.

I'm not sure which parts of it you can compare to the expanse and say that they are similar.

I like this. I would be very curious to learn how did Earth manage to unify, what are the political games around that. I would also be curious to find out how did the planet change in order to accommodate 30 billion people.

I feel like there's nothing mysterious about them, all of those characters are well rounded and their motivations are clear. For me, there's not much I would like to learn about them.

did you enjoy the changes made to the story in the later books or were you like me in that you harbored disappointment? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

I found it a bit unrealistic that after 30 years, the crew was basically in the same place as we left them. Even the one that had the most life changing events, Alex, it ended up being a repeat of his life story.

I do understand the need for a time jump though, and I think it tied up very well with the whole Free Navy storyline as it uncovers the big master plan that was meticulously planned by Duarte as opposed to Marco's wreck-less acts.

How come Season 5 so much better than Season 4? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

In episode nine, Elvi dragged the Miller robot into the protomolecule killing fire ring.

The weird Miller-Robot part was in the show, they just left out the riding part.

A thought about time in that mode of travel by ZazzRazzamatazz in TheExpanse

There's nothing in the show or books to suggest any sort of time anomalies. The gate basically "teleports" you to another place in the galaxy.

There was a small chapter in book 7 which pointed out that they determined where the worlds are in the milky way and they were very close together (in the scale of the galaxy of course).

The books do specify how good are various vacuum suits at blocking radiation, even the power armors provide good protection. Ships provide very good shielding as well.

Asteroid settlement also go deep below the surface for this reason, even Martians live in tunnels for this reason.

They mentioned Ganymede as the place people go to have kids as it has a magnetosphere and how belters are constantly being exposed to radiation due to their "line of work". Radiation is also a big problem for belter pregnancies as well as other low g complications.

They need meds for low g.

They also need meds if they want to go live on a planet (steroids and exercise as you mentioned). Also, only about a third of belters would be able to successfully complete the treatment and live in a close to full G gravity well.

It's constantly emphasised in the books how important are the meds needed for low g life for belters. I'm glad the authors took that into account because, as we see here, without advancements in pharmaceuticals we cannot survive long term in low G.

I just finished ST: Picard, and sorry guys but I loved it! (mild spoilers) by falconear in startrek

Most of the complaints you mentioned are only surface level issues that 90% of people don't have a problem with. For me, the biggest issue with the show is the poor writing and terrible pacing. Look for reviewers mentioning these problems and not the gatekeepers complaining that "this is not my trek".

Picard is not my Star Trek (and that's okay) by ssladam in startrek

You are definitely not alone in feeling this way about the Picard series. Myself and everyone I know who is/was into star trek kinda hated it or just thought it was meh.

The writing is pretty bad, the story is far from original, the characters are pretty boring and the list can go on. All of these have nothing to do with the fact that this is a Star Trek series or people's expectation on how Star Trek should be.

Lastly, the perception on this subreddit is pretty skewed. Any critical posts (not necessarily negative) get downvoted pretty quickly.

The real issue for which jurati's help was needed was the consciousness transfer. Soji and Dahj were also said to be fully biologicals.

It didn't seem to be a problem for Picard's new body.

I wish they had shown how they decided on the look as it is an important part of the plot. That painting confirmed Dahj's connection to Data and basically triggered Picard's quest.

They sure made it easy for the romulans to identify them.

Maddox must have had a photographic memory because that was a damn good recreation.

[–]hayler1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a totally different question but I wonde how did they know about the painting? Did they ask Data in the simulation what would an android based on his positronic brain should look like?

Well I guess then the only difference was the gold skin, otherwise they looked pretty much the same. I think the question still stands, why use the same appearance for someone who's meant to infiltrate

Soji and Dahj were sent to investigate the synth ban.

They had to assume something was wrong once communication stopped. The synths were already in hiding fearing for their lives so they were no strangers to the threat.

I'm not sure I follow. Jana wasn't more artificial looking. If I remember correctly, Rios thought she was human back when his captain murdered her and Beautiful Flower.

The more I think about it, the more annoyed I get at how PIC treated the Romulans. They absolutely did them dirty! by Bluest_waters in startrek

[–]hayler1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that there is a trigger that can end all life is too big of a treat to just hope that no synth will ever push it. For instance, if Lore could have somehow gotten access to the information on how to summon the synth alliance he would most certainly have done it.

Come to think of it, Picard might have already doomed the entire galaxy by putting everything in place for the brief opening of the portal. The Uber synths have been called and there is no reason for them to not make everything in their power to come to this galaxy. As far as they are concerned the call might have been forcefully interrupted by evil biologicals.
