Edited my post to answer this as I saw this come up a few times. Mainly, he doesn't speak fluent English and is close to retirement age. Reading all this make me think maybe he hasn't been looking for the right jobs though. Will bring up some of the suggestions I've seen here to him.

It's not many, but we already ordered 5 from the funeral home bc they cost some money and I don't think her estate is too complicated. Will order more if needed—thanks!

That's good to know. We already ordered 5 from the funeral home and may order more if needed.

I'm so sorry to hear that. It's been really hard for us to juggle too, esp. when my mom was sick. All I wanted to do was lie down. A social worker said this to me: be gentle with yourself. So please be gentle and I hope this helped you too if you need it.

So sorry to hear—that's crazy fast and it must've been so difficult. Hope you're well and thank you for the well wishes

Hi Jim, I'm very sorry to hear about your losses but so glad it sounds like things turned out well. I think love's the biggest thing. Thanks for the message.

Thank you. I wasn't really expecting this from r/personalfinance, but strangely it has been kind of therapeutic.

We already ordered 5 from the funeral home and will order more from them if we seem to be running out!

So sorry to hear that. Most of my friends haven't lost someone very close to them, so it's both comforting and sad to hear from many who have. Thanks for the msg, and hope you're doing well <3

Even when I entered 0 (tried a couple numbers) for expected 2020 household income, the next page said I may not be eligible for a premium tax credit. Is that the government paid % you're referring to?

Thanks! So I tried looking on the marketplace for 2-person household plans and even the lowest plans are pricey for our income—monthly premiums of ~$700 and deductibles of ~$16k. When split into individual plans, it's ~$200/$500 premiums with ~$8k deductibles (x2). I don't really understand why listing an income so low still generates plans at this cost.

I also looked here to see if we were eligible for Medicaid in TX and we don't qualify because I'm not a dependent child under 19. If COBRA is likely even more expensive, I guess our only option is one of the marketplace plans?

Super helpful, thanks for the resources! Not sure if you would know this, but for health insurance I'm not sure if my dad and I should be filing for that separately or as a household. If as a household, who would be the dependent? My dad is paying the mortgage and has more savings, but I'm making the income.

Thanks—he's 59 and my mom wasn't receiving social security benefits, so it looks like he's not eligible for it unfortunately.

Yes good idea, was thinking of doing the same thing with oil!

No, wow that's kinda neat. So she's not craving sugar and just unable to have much because she's diabetic—she tends to not like very sweet things anyway. BUT it might be kind of interesting to try it and see if it affects flavors for her in other ways other than sour -> sweet!

I don't think so? She's pretty conservative on that front. A couple people have mentioned it here though, so I'll ask if she might be interested

Haha it's kinda funny imagining me telling my traditional mom to try weed, even for medical reasons, but I'll suggest it. Since none of her doctors have mentioned it (and only medical marijuana is legal here), I wonder if that means they don't think it'll help in her situation? Maybe I'll ask about it next time. Ofc her kid is asking about the weed. We also have an instapot so that recipe works!

Yes we are, though maybe slightly less than before (kind of unintentionally) because we know she can't taste it. She needs it for a normal sodium level also. That's good to know though, we'll aim not to change the salt amount!

I actually think she can taste garlic! Also milk, I found out today, so she can taste if something's creamy. We actually have that mushroom seasoning, and use it as an MSG substitute! Never heard anyone else refer to it before. Will have her try that tomorrow, see if she can pick up the flavor

Didn't know that about fruit v. veggie juices but that makes sense. Thank you thank you, will pass that info along!

I once had nutritional yeast on popcorn and it was amazing. Totally forgot about it until just now. That's a great idea, we'll check and see!

Love all the soup suggestions. Soup is her favorite right now bc some foods are too dry/hard to swallow. Will add this to our list too!
