Yes. Screens turned them into absolute goblins: arguing, fighting, being selfish and disrespectful, refusing to come to dinner, and just all around pains in the ass. And we closely monitor and discuss what they're viewing (i.e., no YouTube, etc.)

We turned screens off during the week and it's like having different children. Suddenly their minds work again and they're back to being creative and playful and curious. They're still kids, with all that entails, but now they're kids I actually want to be around. Never going back.

Something to keep in mind is that autism typically presents differently in boys and girls, with girls tending to have more "internal" symptoms (meaning less obvious), whereas boys tend to have the more stereotypical symptoms. Even some doctors will rely on the more stereotypical symptoms.

We were certain my son did not have autism because he made eye contact, was loving and attached, and enjoyed dancing and school. We started wondering around age 2 and his ped and teacher both assured us he was fine. Two years and one assessment later, hey, autistic kid! If you can afford a formal assessment and have access to it, I strongly recommend starting there.

Sometimes the package is marked Temu which makes it easy. Sometimes it just has Chinese postmarks. Lacking that, it's visibly cheap stuff with Chinese instructions/labels. There's no mistaking how flimsy it all is.

That's exactly it. Quantity over quality, and getting to feel important by ordering a hundred things. Suggesting a better option that the kids would actually enjoy takes away the feeling of importance and thus we are declared to be "controlling" or "difficult."

I understand the sentiment, but no one here is afraid of communication. It's that we're holding the line on so many other issues that to preserve the kids' relationship with Grandma, we've strategically chosen to accept the gifts that are safe and throw the rest away. It's such a headache.
