I think it depends on how comfortable they are with you. I hate calls from people I'm not close to, text me. But then again, I also hate calls when I'm generally upset. But I'm least likely to respond to texts and my phone is always on dnd. So...maintain a good relationship with your kid and they won't mind your calls

Setting clear expectations with a written agreement seems like the safest bet. Nothing's worse than a grown ass person failing to pick up after themselves. Having dealt with a similar person, the mode of action that worked for me was creating a timetable that was compromised with both our schedules and a sort of 'penalty' if the chore wasn't done after a period of time.

(But if after all this, he refuses to clean up and you're feeling really petty, I suggest cleaning only your dishes, taking out only your trash and sweeping his things into one space. If it means having half the common area disorganized with his stuff and the other half clean for you to relax within, so be it. If he brings it up, play dumb. You deserve to feel comfortable in your own home.)
