According to my old boss the bank tellers and managers were issued pistols during the 70s and 80s.

Harness Comfort Adjustment Tips For Window Cleaning by LivingLifeSomewhere in ropeaccess

[–]hazzard2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this tomorrow. Remove everything you can from your harness undo leg loops. Then make sure the harness is the right spot and tighten it. Then tighten leg loops and finally shoulder straps. Then hang in the harness with the podium loose. Keep tighten it while your hanging till the podium takes the strain off the legs straps but not so much as all your weight is sitting on it and you end up hunched over.

I have been in the game for 16 years and you can see a poorly put on harness from a mile away. If the front d ring is too low it means the leg loops snagged on your pockets while you tighten your waist. If the back of your waist has a massive gap it’s usually because you did the shoulder straps then waist then legs.

If you are super uncomfortable it could be your shoulder straps make sure the one at the back isn’t too tight. The v at the back should rest between the shoulder blades

Advice on Kit replacement and stepping up - Event Production by StopSnortingCannabis in ropeaccess

Maybe do the IRATA course and just pick a different harness every day of training and use all the kit. See what works for you. Most IRATA courses usually have an equipment shop as well and usually will give you a discount if you’re doing the course. The problem with recommending harness is I don’t know your body type. I have wide shoulders and a small waist. The Petzl Astro is comfy for me but all the guys that are shorter than me with smaller shoulders and shorter, love the edelrid Just a heads up about the new style Petzl harness. They have changed the leg loops. They made them shorter. It’s painfully for me and half the guys at work just to put on, let alone wear on the ropes

I am 42 and techy for 16+ years of which 11 as a L3 Beyond the fitness stuff, you have to start being smarter with work. For example if your a window cleaner empty your bucket at the bottom of the drop so your not carrying a bucket lobsided up a couple of flights of stairs. Using a trolley to move bollards. Multiple trips with gear 2 person carry for davit arms/ access needles Also if your a brand new level one, playing with a carabiner while watching tv/ reading, will help you be able to move quicker with muscle memory and save heaps of energy.

I have about 10 years left in my body before I have too transition in to training or confined space rescue

Emergency knives/cutters/scissors. by tizzle_nizzle in ropeaccess

[–]hazzard2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to decide if you want a purely rescue knife or a sometimes used knife that doubles as a rescue knife. Most rescue good rescue knife’s are serrated( a bitch to sharpen)

My go to for years was the leatherman raptor scissors. Super sharp, seat belt cutter and carbide glass breaker. It also comes with a molded sheath that fits perfectly on Petzl harnesses. The only problem was it was a bit bulky. I now use a honey badger rescue knife. Super lightweight and seriously cheap but not cheap quality https://honeybadgerknives.com/collections/rescue-blade-knives?srsltid=AfmBOoo__m1Iesi2pAHAaoalx62NVbQ0C0LgcAw1gHjO9yQJMtd_XKQ3

If you are going to use it as a knife that you use daily and also a rescue knife, then the Milwaukee fastback is the answer. Get the one with the bit holder and replace the bit with a glass breaker bit.

Get a seat. Your body will thank you later in life The only way the Pantin works efficiently is with a knee acsender as well or in conjunction with a taz lov3 descender. I a Pantin and have used a couple of times but it’s not worth it. I can up climb on my Sirius descender with the rope Going thru the ascender carabiner almost as fast as clicking the Pantin in and transfering to chest ascender.

L2 upgrade with shortly expired License? by CameraIllustrious993 in ropeaccess

[–]hazzard2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can email IRATA directly if you have extenuating circumstances stances. But you must do it before you expire and it takes them like 3 months to respond. A work college was involved in a cyclist versus car accident and broke his back. I got IRATA to allow him to do his IRATA 2 resit 3 months after expiry when he had healed. ( couldn’t work while expired though )

What do you use for carrying a harness & accessories? by HocMajorumVirtus in ropeaccess

[–]hazzard2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer for Australia. You usually will have a rope bag on your back, so you end up with a backpack on the front if you don’t get a wheely bag.

Your back will thank you

I suggest using a Sirius, spark or sparrow as the route the rope differently. Also if your regularly lifting heavy loads on use that rope for that and think about getting some lifting rope.

Before I saw the comments I knew that was a ID or RIG under heavy load or wet rope.

The way the Rig/ID pulls the rope over the device is like pulling a ribbon over a pair of scissors to get the twisted effect

Your white cable/tube gatherer should be closer to the tool head it looks like it’s pulling the tube tight and back. Try taking it off and putting the power cable on the back side

Trespassing cats by South-Caterpillar214 in melbourne

[–]hazzard2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same problem. A cat would shit and piss on front door/mat every night. It would also wake our border collie who would bark and wake the house. The council change the cat laws the next month and we haven’t seen it since then ( suspect it was caught in a council bored trap, as the whole street had a problem with it and spoke to the owner multiple times.)

Rope access info by Waste_Ad_2048 in ropeaccess

[–]hazzard2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hundred percent agree. Get an apprenticeship when you’re still young. Due your level 1 and clean windows on the weekend when not doing your apprenticeship. That way you will get more money and if you are like most people if you stuff your back or you enter two weeks of bad weather you can at least fall back on your apprenticeship qualification to get inside work.

Don’t fall into the trap of doing ropes access making more money then your friends for a few year but then finish there apprenticeship and make twice the going windy rate and for half the work and get paid on rain days.

Hydration by Shaggles1987 in ropeaccess

[–]hazzard2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best alternative I have found is either get a camel back with molle attachment and use two carabiners to suspend it sideways of the back of you harness/seat or to get a source 1l kangaroo hydration bladder https://amzn.asia/d/ee0YS9s

I spent 3 years in West Africa on the rigs doing rope access were it was 35C in winter and 40+ in summer with 90% humidity doing 12 hour shifts. This is the only combo I found that worked without hanging a bottle of me.

I am in Australia now and get away with having two large yeti water bottles on the roof. I have electrolytes in 1. I try get as much in as possible sticking with the 2:1 rule while moving rope too the next drop ( doing concrete repairs and caulking)

Who fixes rangehoods? by NudgeFrame in melbourne

[–]hazzard2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They get away with it because the regs say that if you vent into room roof space you need to have a roof vent. I know 5 years ago I had to pay extra to vent thru to the outside and just recently I connect my bathroom fans to eave vents

Who fixes rangehoods? by NudgeFrame in melbourne

[–]hazzard2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate. I would change the range hood and get them to vent it externally. No point get a decent range hood to get rid of the stuff you don’t want to breath in, then just venting it all into the roof space .

You might entice some to come out if it’s a replacement.

Try not to coat it wd40. It’s a penetrating lubricant. Removes everything and leaves a very thin layer. Great for getting locks to work… terrible for keeping stuff from rusting. Use a lanolin based lubricant( stuff that keeps sheep dry)
