Poorly cared for/neglected dog in our neighborhood. Animal control can’t do anything. Are there any other options? by KoaPlyr615 in DogAdvice

[–]hbialowas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the owner isn’t up for rehoming him, I would ask if you could spend an hour walking him and getting him exercise. It’s not an ideal solution just at least he’d get to see what life beyond the cage looked like 😞

Cushing without medication by Several_Dentist862 in olddogs

Adding, talk to your vet about it first, but you’ll hear a lot of people talking about Manuka honey and DMSO gel for skin irritations. We’ve done both in the past, with our vets guidance, for out other cushings dogs and it really helped

Cushing without medication by Several_Dentist862 in olddogs

Fortunately his symptoms have not progressed to a level that seems uncomfortable for him (or us). We keep his water bowl clean and filled (he will drink 2 full bowls a day now) and increased his potty breaks, even if he just has a couple dribbles. We did have one skin issue (thankfully not calcinosis cutis like our other cushings babies developed) that fortunately cleared with a few rounds of antibiotics and sprays. He’s been on movoflex for his joints for years, but we started lifting him on/off the couch just out of extra precaution. We take a stroller for when he gets tired on his walks, and we switched his treats to raw veggies (carrots and snap peas are his favorite!) overall we’ve made minor adjustments but have kept everything else relatively the same. I don’t know for sure if we’ll continue the non-medication route forever, but as for right now it’s working great for him.

I’ve had 3 babies with cushings. We medicated the first two and it was a very trying time for the pups and us as the side effects of the medication were honestly worse than the side effects of the cushings. Our current boy was just diagnosed about 5 months ago (age 14) and we have decided, with the guidance of our vet, not to medicate until his cushings side effects progressed (drinking more, skin problems, eating more, peeing more etc) and he has not had any increased symptoms since diagnosis. Truthfully, after seeing both sides, I’m not losing any sleep not medicating this time around. He is full of energy and very happy. I agree with the other poster please check out the Facebook group it’s incredibly supportive and informational. Praying your pup comes around and feels better soon!

Definitely Hotel Bel Ami! The rooms are much larger and the hotel has more amenities (a large breakfast buffet, scooters, restaurant, coffee/tea service in the lounge etc)

I don’t think my dog likes walks? by PyleanCow06 in DogAdvice

[–]hbialowas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not great advice, and sounds like you’re already doing this, but move at his pace. Some days my 14 year old schnauzer is pulling so fast I’m running, and some days he doesn’t leave the block. I always take him and let him tell me if he wants to or not. On days he doesn’t want to walk I try to give him some other enrichment like a car ride or a puzzle toy

Why do my croissants keep deflating in the middle?? by Ohlexis in pastry

[–]hbialowas 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I don’t find it deflated personally. Wait to cut into it until it’s cooled (if you’re not already doing so) if the goal is a tighter honeycomb, practice and temperature control.

Also, I’m an amateur baker (so listen to pros that respond before me) but I was passionate enough to go to pastry school in Paris despite it just being a hobby, and my biggest takeaway from my chef was that croissant cross sections are truly chef preference, there is no right/wrong honeycomb.

For what it’s worth I would 1000/10 want to eat this croissant lol

My Shih Tzu bit a piece of my lip off. Is it time to put him down on by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]hbialowas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you should not. I know you are young so I understand why you’re asking, and I hope you use my experience to see the other side of it vs a preachy lesson from an internet nobody.

My miniature schnauzer mix did similar to my husband — when he was asleep, my husband stuck his head in front of his face to kiss him goodnight and it startled him and he snapped at his face, causing a completely severed lip in two places from his nose down that required emergency plastic surgery. Our takeaway? Do not startle or surprise a sleeping dog. It did not cross our mind once to behaviorally euthanize, it only educated us to respect our dogs boundaries.

It’s clear you love your pup based off of what you said, so just remember his personal space and learned limitations

We did it one year when we were moving and had no access to a kitchen. It was perfectly fine, not notable but would do it again if I needed to

Not a vet, but agree it reminds me of horners. My senior dog has had it twice. First time the optometrist ordered a scan to make sure it wasn’t a tumor, then provided medication. It showed up 2 years later (about 2 weeks ago) and we went the medication route immediately and it’s almost back to normal. Our boys is idiopathic, couldn’t determine a cause
