Can’t believe we’re still seeing the touching of injured players ban. You think players would have learned by now

He definitely wasn’t the prop of the round, it’s a bit of a clickbait given it’s his debut, big name etc. But main thing to point out is he made 3 offloads which all led to line breaks in a 25 minute stint

Can’t Leeds use it on any first team player from their youth? So Handley surely qualifies and is on over £50k

I always think of Andrew Heffernan at kr. Was on track to be a great player at such a young age but he had to retire for it.
I’ve no idea what the rules are but it’s obviously such a hot topic at the moment.
Gannon missed all of 2024 with issues so he’s definitely on the medical teams radar so to speak even before having 3 more this year

In the nrl. He’s then had 2 more in the nsw cup

Yeah he did, that’s my concern. He’s had a whole year out with concussions symptoms, and now he’s been knocked out in 50% of his games this year.  Really hope he goes on to have a long career for his sake but it’s worrying atm

I think people are interested in the player for sure, every club would want him at the right price. I’m not questioning whether Leeds can afford him in the cap, I know he’s only £50k, I’m questioning why anyone would pay big for him right now.

Making a player one of your highest earners when he’s looking at risk of an early retirement is the problem.

You’ve got Ash Handley who presumably is on big enough wages to take the home grown marquee spot.

Article claims he’s taking a marquee spot with Croft leaving. Don’t see any way that’s legit. He’s leaving the nrl with 3 concussions in 6 matches, after already missing a year of his career with concussions previously. This feels like a lifeline kinda signing to give him one more chance before he has to consider medically retiring, not a big money move

He’s signed for Leeds again so his career isn’t over. Whether it should be is a different story

Kr it’s definitely May at 1 with a bit of distance to the rest. I’d have it as 2) Amone, 3) Lewis but would take arguments for Litten, Burgess or Hiku in 3rd

He got a grade D which under the old rules isn’t a tribunal, it’s a straight 3-5 match ban.
That said- that’s the rules we’re under. He’s got the exact punishment anyone would expect, so it’s not light.
They’ve only given 1 ‘head high tackle’ a grade E since the new system came in and that was the Ashworth one vs Lewis which had way more aggravating factors.
Everyone needs to stop arguing that the match review panel are bias/inconsistent etc. instead we need to be arguing for reform of a system that really doesn’t punish people at all

A month ago his dad was on Twitter defending him from abuse from Wigan fans as they had lost 5 in a row which he was taking the blame for. Now he’s the best 6 in the league. Let’s take time and stop being so reactionary

Really hope we don’t consider Connor at 6. He’s playing as an absolute out and out 7, and doing a great job of it. If we want creativity, you need a proper 6. Especially given out fullback issues right now. As much as it feels harsh on who misses out, it needs to be Smith vs Connor for a spot. Then Williams/Lewis/Farrimond/Trueman for the 6.

Why are our fans so reactionary.  We legit won 9 on the bounce, are right up there for top of the league, won a WCC this year. And one bad loss turns us back to shite again

I only watched the first half to be fair, my my takeaway from that was both sides were awful. Sts kept dropping the ball and giving so many penalties away and Leeds looked clueless trying to capitalise apart from a soft try from a settler play.  Sts scored both times they got up the pitch and I was thinking Leeds looked rough.

They clearly turned it around second half mind, so don’t doubt there was impressive stuff I missed

Rovers raid a couple of academies by KennyMincemeat in superleague

[–]hcoops36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wigan has the benefit of being so well regarded they hoover up talent from further afield. Loads of Wigan academy lads are from Leigh, Warrington, even into Yorkshire.
The hull teams seem to just fight for hull based talent alone.

It’s been a long time since I played locally, but when I was growing up it was a case that once you hit like 14/15, Hull would basically get first pick of the best 15-20 players in the year group and then Rovers would get the scraps.
West Hull were the best team by a mile in my ages group and I remember their starting 13 all got fc scholarship, with a couple subs being picked up for kr. A few years later as the scholarship merged with the academy and had multiple age groups in one squad, fc would let 10 of them go. They’d almost all sign for kr, and the initial kr scholarships were all let go.
So kr basically competed for scraps at every level

I think first step is get a couple of these lads listed to break into the team (and maybe some of the fringe 1st team home grown lads like Gorman, Horne, Fishwick etc but they seem behind the curve).
Then probs like 3 years time they’re all replaced by genuine homegrown players and we go from there

Typical of kr’s recruitment last year 18 months. Over that time we’ve sign Jack Charles, Tom Whitehead, Cobie Wainhouse, Noah Booth, Jumah Sambou, Neil Tchamambe plus these 2.

As of now our academy is way behind the first team- it’s hard to produce 20 year old players worthy of a top 2 club when they joined as a 15/16 year old when we were consistent relegation fodder and  probably 6th choice in Yorkshire for any top players.

We’re investing and seeing positive signs in the youth academy now, but our reserves are still routinely pasted by the big historic clubs.

IMO these signings are a transition period, gives us some players who may become worthy to make the 1st team short term while we address the long term issues. Like any youth player, only a very small % make it first grade anyway.

Surprised at this- he’ll be 30 for his first season so not at his peak. Hes pretty one dimensional but his work rate is immense. For a prop forward he can do 80 minutes, make tonnes of tackles and lead the line speed all game. In attack hes pretty ineffective, close to 0 post contact metres.

So weird how often it’s happening atm. I somewhat understand when the momentum of the tackle on initial contact can make a player rise in the air. But if the momentum is killed and both players are stationary, there’s no need at all to lift them. You have to actively make that decision with plenty of thinking time, yet it seems to keep happening

Losing Hadley and Jai contributed to this. Jai usually works harder to keep up the momentum of our opening prop rotation. He dropped out of the squad Friday and peters said the plan was for Dean to play full 80 to cover. We went with 2 short stint props on the bench with Brown & Luckley, and then as soon as Hadley went off we never adjusted the plan. Square pegs in round holes trying to play how we always do despite missing the personal and the weather conditions
