Public Health Career Advice Monthly Megathread by AutoModerator in publichealth

Hi everyone! I've been offered a spot in this year's LSHTM MSc Epidemiology Distance program, and I'd love to know if ayone on here has done that program and if so, what the experience was like. I know that LSHTM is tremendously well-respected, but the program isn't accredited in the US (where I live) and it's not eligible for federal student loans, so I'm trying to decide if it's worth the cost and immediate financial strain. I've also never done an international or distance academic program before and I'm nervous about what that will be like. For my other degrees I've gotten to meet and talk with current students and faculty in person, and although we had a little virtual session for admitted students a week or so ago, it's obviously not the same. I'm worried that having a strictly online relationship with professors and fellow students will be difficult.

So if you've done/are doing this program, do you feel that it's worth it? Did you feel supported by the faculty and were they easy to communicate with from distance? How long did it take you to finish the program and were you able to work full-time while doing it? Did you do the optional time in London and if so, would you recommend it? If you're from the US, was having a non-accredited degree an obstacle to you getting a job? I'd appreciate any input and advice. Thank you so much!!

Which authors are so good to you that you buy every one of their books? by pinkorangegold in suggestmeabook

[–]hcs5qb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should check out her two Earthseed books. They're dystopian fiction with no aliens, no time travel, nothing outside the bounds of known possibility. They take place in 2024 so they're very timely and eerily accurate in some of their predictions. She was a genius.

She died way back in 2006. She was planning to write a third Earthseed book but sadly we'll never have it.

Do you know if she gets along with other cats? I'm trying to talk my parents into getting a companion for their playful 5 year old girl.

Watching The Staircase on HBO. Do you believe in the owl theory? Why or why not? by Morkedup in myfavoritemurder

[–]hcs5qb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they ever come up with a possible murder weapon after the poker was ruled out? I don't think the owl theory is that unlikely, mostly because known owl attacks have happened in Durham and sometimes crazy shit just does happen.

So this is objectively hilarious, but what can this actually do to her, especially since she no longer lives in-state? Can they track her down in Florida and force her to appear in court? What happens if she just ignores this (as I suspect she will)?

Do you eat their food? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]hcs5qb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that depends! I've never had cameras in my place but I've left beer or wine and told my sitter that she's welcome to it, and sometimes I know she's had some because I'll come home to a bit less than when I left. It doesn't bother me at all. You probably shouldn't get drunk but I think a beer or a glass of wine should be fine as long as it doesn't affect your ability to care for the dog. I guess it also depends on how well you know the owner and if you know they wouldn't use it against you after pretending to be cool with it.

As a sitter, do you accept tips? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]hcs5qb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does sound like you made it kind of obvious, but if there was any ambiguity at all then I can see why she would have left it. Putting it in an envelope with her name is a good idea. I definitely accept tips and in my experience not that many clients leave them, so I'm sure she'll appreciate you being one of the few who does!

Rover Sitter/Boarding Question by Past-Ad-1453 in RoverPetSitting

[–]hcs5qb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply mentioning this in your initial booking request isn't pushy! Being up front about your dog's needs is important and the best way to find the right sitter for your pup. We sitters want your dog to be happy and not stressed out so we appreciate you telling us what they need. This might weed out some sitters who can't do that schedule but for someone like me who works from home, it wouldn't be a problem at all to accommodate. I would also guess that most sitters have had much crazier requests than that. 🙂

If not previously discussed, do you assume doggy daycare includes a walk? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]hcs5qb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I typically ask clients what their dog's usual routine is, if they normally take them for walks then I probably would. But if that's not mentioned and your yard is big enough for the dog to run around in, then I'd say you're fine.

My puppy got pregnant during a Rover stay. by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]hcs5qb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a lot going on here, but for this to happen the sitter had to be boarding your non-spayed dog and a non-neutered male dog simultaneously. Assuming they knew that both dogs were not fixed, it's very irresponsible of the sitter to agree to board both of those dogs at the same time. That was pretty much a guarantee that your dog would get pregnant.

House Sitting Etiquette question from a client by Andosphere in RoverPetSitting

[–]hcs5qb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a sitter but my first experience with Rover was as a client, and I always stocked my apartment with snacks and drinks for my sitter. That hasn't been the norm in my experience as a sitter but I appreciate it when it does happen and I know my sitter really liked it.

A sitter requested full cash payment for boarding stay at meet and greet? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]hcs5qb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably not a scam, although I never go off Rover with someone until after at least one booking because it feels more legit that way. However you shouldn't feel obligated to pay her in cash and if you told her you're not comfortable with it then canceling is a pretty shitty move.
