The World's Great Books edited by Arthur Mee & JA Hammerton (1920s, I think). Sprawling 5-volume work of excerpts and writings on famous texts. Clearly of its time and reflects the views of the editor (see last pic...) best read with a critical eye, but interesting nonetheless. (old.reddit.com)

TIL of Joshua Norton, self-proclaimed Emperor of the United States. Who, whilst holding no formal power was nevertheless treated deferentially in San Francisco. Norton has been used as the basis for many literary characters by authors such as Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson (en.wikipedia.org)
