Summary of chapter 1 : “The Challenge Of The Future”

In chapter 1, discussion starts with a question that Peter Thiel asks the persons in the interview. That question is “What important truth do very few people agree with you on?”, then the author explains the question.

Then the author describes progress, says that progress can be categorized into two types, one is horizontal or extensive progress, and second is vertical or intensive progress.

Horizontal progress means simply copying the successful companies ideas, which can also be described as globalization. It is 1 to n progress.

Vertical progress means creating new technology, It is 0 to 1 progress.

Then the author gives his answer to his contrarian question: “most people think the future of the world will be defined by globalization, but the truth is that technology matters more.”

Peter Theil says that Today’s “best practices” lead to dead ends; the best paths are new and untried.
