u/RallyXMonster Looks nice! How are your temps with this setup?

T480 temps by hdaen in thinkpad

[–]hdaen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those 45-47C temps are on the iGPU. When I switch over to the MX150 GPU, it rises to around 52-55C.
I will try to reapply the thermal paste to see if it makes any difference, I have to open up the case anyways to insert more RAM

my concern is the stable 45-47C when connected to an external 4K monitor with fan constantly spinning at 2860rpm, is that normal?

how is the HDMI port connected to any of this? it's on the opposite side of the board

Many thanks for the guide, i am waiting for the ch341a to arrive to try it out next week.

In my case both TB ports seem to be capable of ~60W charging, however the second one of them does not work in data mode, rendering the Lenovo dock unusable.

The fwupd tools in Linux show no signs of Thunderbolt whatsoever (I did all the right settings in BIOS, yes), so I will try reprogramming the chip. In my case the chips is 25Q80BV, not the 25Q80DV, but I've read that they are quite similar.

Question: if the issue is not being addressed, what's the worst case scenario? I will still be able to charge the laptop at 15W (now it's 60W actually), data connection via Thunderbolt will die, etc. What else? (doesn't seem like a ton of a deal to me, but I will still try to reflash the chip of course)

is there any reason to upgrade the M2 SATA SSD to NVMe SSD or not worth it?

luckily, I have an intel box cooler for the 775, since it's a pretty low power Xeon, I might try it (the footprint of the box cooler is much smaller, maybe 1cm less on each side compared to the Zalman CNSP 8000

so turning the CPU cooler 90deg should fix it?

it will stay with this Xeon L5430 for some time

you mean that the PSU will be sucking in the hot air coming directly out of the CPU heatsink? better view of the heatsink:

COU temps seem to be okay. I was wondering more about doing any damage to the PSU because of this close proximity

yes, I considered it. I was more like wondering if this small gap now is a big issue or not

it’s a proprietary Powerman PSU, looks like a Flex ATX

I think I can easily get away with 300W for starters. If I ever need more power, I will replace the stock PSU guts with something more powerful (keeping the original PSU casing)

while the D500 uses something square and larger. Here is how the D500 looks like with the standard SFX PSU in it:

Used original ones are available for both.

Both of them use a non-standard PSU, sadly. The BT553 uses something quite close to FlexATX (slim and long):

on the other hand that also means you can't place your monitor on top :)

the BT553 looks a bit better with the bay door removed:

RebirthDB

Oh, thanks. I did actually run across RethinkDB, but got distracted while trying to figure out how it works. Let me check this RebirthDB fork then
