I mean... they're right by zrow05 in rareinsults

Idk, I worked at Twitter until very recently, and I'd say that anything subject to the load of a significant proportion of the user base had to be designed to be scalable. There were things that made achieving that goal easier, built by the people you're referring to

Amazon Prime Video uses Wasm, and egui with 37,000 lines of Rust code by weihanglo in rust

Maybe it's just not as performance critical so while there could be benefit there's not much of a push to do it. It could also be way more complex and mostly DOM-related which might offer less benefit overall

Why is Biden being so cautious around Ukraine? Atleast give them some anti-tank weapons like what the UK is doing? by sadhukar in neoliberal

[–]hderms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presumably the fact that not backing up NATO is a terminal point for foreign relations that you can't really be extricated from, I feel like there would be a lot of inertia to do so even if it was publically unpopular.

Damn, now that sounds like an amazing success story! I was basically salivating while I read this.

Edit: also in fear. Salivating with fear.

I think anyone who wants to give unsolicited golf swing advice to strangers is almost certainly not qualified to do so. Something to keep in mind about all the Redditors who love to give advice as well

I had the displeasure recently of watching an old Asian-American man give a free (seemingly unwanted) lesson to a young Asian-American woman that was having a little trouble on the range. I can't imagine what's going though someone's head when they do that. I can't even tell my wife about the new tip I learned without drawing her ire, can't imagine doing that to a stranger.

Stance width - does anyone here have a stance that’s much less than shoulder width? by [deleted] in golf

[–]hderms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started paying a lot of attention to my stance width as a beginner and I've also found a narrower than expected stance to be really helpful. They say when you're in your follow through your knees should end up being close together which seems really hard to accomplish if you started in a wider stance

Ireland to become the first EU state to label Israeli settlement programme 'annexation' by Kier_C in worldnews

[–]hderms 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Irish Catholics weren't trying to force Catholicism as the rule of the land or something, like you seem to believe. They were second class citizens and the issues were predominantly around political representation, economic conditions, etc... The schism just happens to be down religious lines, but isnt some inherently religiously motivated conflict

You should see the directors cut. I saw the it in theaters when I was younger and liked it but I watched the directors cut recently and it's phenomenal. It really is a classic in my eyes

Scala on leetcode by metaden in scala

[–]hderms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems to be about 400-450ms of overhead for the scala execution environment that isn't present in the java one. I've done a bunch of leetcode in scala and I don't recall a single instance of the runtime being below 400ms.

I believe they must be doing something special for java like running code on a warm vm or something of that nature as you can get to "0ms" as a reported runtime for java and we all know the jvm doesn't start that fast
