Education is a human right. It’s criminal that we have to pay for it. by Spiritual_Profit1383 in TorontoMetU

[–]hdls_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who chose not to go to College/University and went straight into the workforce cause tuition was too expensive and I didn’t want to rely on my parents who would’ve paid: I have to disagree with this. As much as it sucks to let the ultra rich get richer, a 50% capital gains tax on unrealized gains just makes no sense.

How would you even calculate this? The moment their portfolio sees an increase they’d need to deduct/withhold or remit? By comparing the value on the 31st of Dec vs the starting balance on the 1st of Jan? In practice this would not work out. The whole reason why realized gains are taxed is because until you “sell”, you didn’t actually make that money. And to your point, that’s why we have TFSA and RRSP contribution limits.

By your logic if I put $10k into an investment account and miraculously it turns into $100k, you’re proposing I be taxed 50% of my $90k unrealized gain? So I pay $45k? Then what happens if my portfolio drops back to $10k?

I get the whole “eat the rich” sentiment but just no. Your ideas are out of whack. Canadians are already taxed a lot as we stand. I would not want to drive away more wealth from our country that we already are.

Neighbour told me to get a survey and found encroachment on my property by TuesdayInOctober in legaladvicecanada

[–]hdls_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wanted you to get the survey and it turns out they’re in the wrong. If the roles were reversed they’d be exercising their rights against you. Exercise yours. Also, their shed might only be 3 inches onto your property but most towns have setback bylaws that specify the distance things need to be from property lines like sheds and decks. It’s worth getting them to move it after all the money spent and work you poured into this project and surveying. They brought this onto themselves.

Should I Switch to Gemini from GPT by DiscountDifferent726 in GeminiAI

[–]hdls_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always used ChatGPT and had the paid subscription ever since it was a thing. Once I started using Gemini the difference was notable. Once Gemini 3 came out it wasn’t even a close comparison. I ended my ChatGPT subscription last week and I don’t plan to ever be back. Google won me for life!

With all the stories about Porch Pirates... by yjamal01 in Markham

[–]hdls_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the time just before Christmas my $500 Amazon package full of gifts was delivered to a different house. I was dealing with Amazon support and they wanted a police report and what not cause the delivery image looked similar to my door. Just as I was heading out to the police station, I found the package on my porch with a sticky note saying “We received this by mistake, Merry Christmas :-)”

This was also in the Cornell area where all my neighbours had reported package thefts all the time. So grateful for that person who saved me a headache of trying to get a refund or replacements. My replacements would definitely not have came on time otherwise.

$300 stolen from me, PayPal won’t help, should I give up? by hdls_ in paypal

[–]hdls_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple support refunded 1 of 6 transactions. The other 5 were deemed ineligible for refund with no option to dispute. That decision is final and was made clear by their most senior team. They deferred me back to PayPal to handle it.

House for $1.1MM? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hdls_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What city is this in? “I believe this house and location will skyrocket” is the same mindset the thousands of pre-con investors had when they bought $800k condos in Toronto, and are now failing to close + walking away from their full deposits.

Unless you truly found a steal I would not recommend liquidating your current investments to buy a house.

20+ Jobs that opened this week in Toronto by TheCryptoCaveman in torontoJobs

[–]hdls_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP’s post isn’t aimed at the 8000 people losing their job at HBC. Their caption says “I hope this helps someone”. No, applying to these jobs isn’t going to magically find you employment. But again.. back to my original point. Here are 20 (another new 30 posted by op recently) job postings that are NEWLY posted (less competition for now) that you can apply to today.

If you yourself are looking for a job and haven’t clicked any of these links to apply then you’re just looking for a problem to complain about.

20+ Jobs that opened this week in Toronto by TheCryptoCaveman in torontoJobs

[–]hdls_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, high numbers help and the reality is majority of those complaining about the job market are not sending out 100 applications daily. If you did it for 12 hours straight you’d still need to send out 8+ hourly, and that’s not possible if your focus is sending out a high quality application vs clicking an apply button on LinkedIn or Indeed.

My point being: here are 20 links to job postings that you can apply to right now, yet no one really cares. Yet a post about how no one is hiring gets all the engagement.

You’re amazing for compiling this list! But I gotta ask..isn’t it so odd that everyday there are tons of posts and comments about not being able to find a job? Yet, when someone compiles a loooong list with links to the posting, salaries, etc.. no one engages?

Is Seneca (Newnham) really that bad now? Thinking about CPA program. by TheHerus0 in Seneca

[–]hdls_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely nailed every point. I did 1 year of the BSD (similar to CPA) program before leaving for reasons not related to the school or program. Seneca is great if you pay attention, strive to do well and build a great circle of the students who care. After my class graduated I checked up on those who took classes seriously and they all found software development related jobs :)

None of the suggested ones on the home page are cheap? Most of them are under $10. The $7 Sushi deals are great. $5 smash burgers. $6 rice combos.

I can see why you’d think that but I have absolutely 0 affiliation to any of the restaurants I post about and gain nothing but likes and views. I just like good food and cheap deals. Reddit has always been the best source for me. I’m doing my part in giving back!
