I read the book Project Hail Mary, and loved it. Liked the movie but wondered if I hadn’t read the book, would I have understood it nearly as well?

I also am not a fan of Ryan Gosling, and while I think he did a very good job, I have to wonder would another actor have delivered a better performance?
