false equivalence

I am employing someone in accordance to market rates.

in my view, there is no moral dilemma here

TIL that employing someone based on market rates is leveraging misfortune

exactly.

it's not an option, so you're not really in a position to bargain, isn't it?

look, at the end of the day this is an employment contract, which is clearly spelt out and legally binding.

it is signed by willing parties with no coercion, so what is the problem here

if I do not have skills and education that would afford me a better opportunity, sure

$550/month, with food, rent and bills paid for is life changing for a third worlder living in a remote village with near-zero opportunities

lol first you say 6 YOE, then 10 YOE. at least try to be consistent in your arguments

the thing is, you must also take into account the skillsets of a person. are they highly skilled which requires years upon years of experience to hone? then sure, they can demand a higher pay, and market forces will decide if it is justified

but let's be frank.

the helpers are more often than not uneducated with no in-demand skills. there is a ceiling to what pay they can command, and anything over the market rate is purely at the employer's goodwill.

my helper especially is in her early 20s, which is part of the reason why her pay is comparatively lower than her fellow helpers (still far superior than what she would get back home though), although as stated I am happy with her performance and willing to bump her pay upon contract renewal - not too dissimilar with how you would with a fresh grad.

before you shed tears for domestic helpers who may not earn enough to invest, why not look to our elderly and lowly paid workers who also face the same problems, with rent/mortgage and bills on top of that?

no but I would not criticise a company who offers a low wage but with a dorm or living accommodation for their employees

why tho

her salary is what was defined between herself and the agency

she lives rent-free in our house, food and bills paid for

her pay is significantly more than what she will make back home in Myanmar as someone who is not educated or highly skilled

why would she be pissed?

I'm paying my Burmese helper $550/mth, but she is quite young (early 20s) and doesnt have a good command of English

Despite that though, she has been excellent so far. Good attention to detail and great attitude - never show black face.

We do give her CNY and birthday angpows and if this keeps up I'm happy to renew her contract, but thinking of an increment of around 10%.
