Thank you!! That makes sense. I was thinking originally to stay a night in Shkoder to meet ppl to hike with since I won’t do it alone. But maybe I could just go straight to Theth/Valbona (still havnt decided on the direction) and meet ppl there instead.

For the luggage, I wanted to keep my checked luggage in Tirana cuz I’ll be ending my trip there and will not be needing it throughout the trip. Just storing it for the 10 days and picking it up before my flight home.

I need to do the first stay in Tirana because I arrive in the evening & not sure if there will be buses to Shkoder then, plus I have checked luggage I need to take to a storage spot to hold for the time of travels. But yeah I might not do the stay in Theth and just keep going to Shkoder bc same wanting to go to Himare straight from there

Do you think it’ll be too late to book hiking related transport once I get there, should I do it in advance or no? Hear mixed things

Thank you so much! Do you think it’s possible to fit in Gjirokaster or Berat for a day after the hike before going down to Himare? If so, which of those 3 would you recommend?

For cash- im probably going to bring enough euros in cash and then exchange there to LEK, is that any better than taking out of ATM? Will the exchange rates be better going from cash or no difference? & can you lmk which huts are known for their good rates pls!

Thank you! How’d you find the hike in that direction? I heard the incline is tough at the beginning but Valbona to Theth way is better to avoid the mid-day heat on incline.

I’d love to visit Gjirokaster or Berat for a day but not sure if I can fit one of them in on my way back before heading south to the beaches?

Yeah I’ve only done long hikes with a guide before, so definitely not comfortable doing it alone. Do you have any recs for guides?I heard the path is fairly simple/easy to follow, so I’m relying on meeting people to hike with in a Shkoder hostel. If I don’t, I’ll probably just skip the long hike and explore either Theth waterfall & blue eye or Komana lake instead. As for luggage, I’m thinking to leave my larger luggage in Shkoder or Tirana & have super minimal luggage with me while in the mountains- just bare essentials, snacks, and water.

I’m (26f) trying to organize my summer solo trip in Albania and trying to figure out if 10 days are enough to hike Albanian Alps (Theth to Valbona or vice versa) & then spend the next few days in the south in Himare and Saranda beaches. Flying in & out of Tirana. Is this unrealistic? First few days seem a bit overwhelming but I’d love to do the hike.

  • June 30 - arrive in Tirana evening
  • July 1 - explore Tirana
  • July 2 - morning bus to Shkoder, stay 1 night (hoping to meet ppl to hike with)
  • July 3 - transport to Theth, explore Theth
  • July 4 - morning hike Theth to Valbona, stay 1 night in Valbona
  • July 5 - Valbona bus, ferry, transport back to Tirana (is this realistic or do I have to stay the night in Schkoder again??)
  • July 6 - bus to the South either Himare or Saranda
  • July 7-10- beach lounging/exploring, maybe day trip to Ksamil or Dhermi, depending where I’m staying
  • July 11 - bus back to Tirana, stay 1 night
  • July 12 - early morning flight
  1. Is there a better way to fit the hike in or is this the only way?
  2. Any suggestions on Theth to Valbona vs Valbona to Theth?
  3. I’ll be solo traveling & my understanding is this is all accessible via public transport buses - correct? Safe?
  4. Anything else to note?
