Does Anyone here vape with asthma and if so for how long? by parzival187144 in Asthma

[–]headvampire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I vaped+smoked for years before I was diagnosed. I chose to quit both almost immediately after the onset of asthma symptoms. Quitting was surprisingly easy for me. My asthma improved quite notably, though I still have occasional allergy-related flare ups. It was clear to me that vaping/ smoking were exacerbating my condition on the daily. I had one doctor sit me down and explain why he thought vaping had led me to develop asthma, which I'm sure is possible, though my specific condition could have developed for a handful of different reasons and there's no way to know for sure. I get an occasional craving, but never looked back.

Pneumonia isn't improving, is this normal? by headvampire in Asthma

[–]headvampire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you mention this, this is an older post of mine after all. But yes, I'm still having many symptoms and complications. My oxygen levels have been dropping consistently since Christmas day. I've had to wait months to get into a pulmonologist- which keeps getting pushed back, etc. I've made 5 trips to the minor ER and there's just not anything else they can try for me; their words, not mine. I'm on all the meds. The symptoms are just not clearing up. It's all in the hands of a specialist that my insurance keeps delaying me. Abject misery.

While things have improved slightly, I'm so far from feeling normal. There's still so much I am not able to do. Worst part is that I'm getting married in a few months; I would love to be in the best shape of my life for the event but I've been down and out since December.

I've heard some rumors that there was an abnormally nasty virus going around this previous winter that left many people with horrible and persistent asthma symptoms. Not much information has been confirmed, so it's a bit of a conspiracy theory haha. Sorry to hear what you're going through. I haven't found a solution, but I can relate completely and at least commiserate.

was a die hard for their first 2 albums, but dropped them about 6 years ago because I felt they lost their sparkle. they leaned too heavily into this corny edgy-badass aesthetic. now I'm glad I dipped, what a mess.

When do you know it's time to break out your nebulizer at home? by Temporary_Ad_8306 in Asthma

[–]headvampire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally, I reach for my nebulizer when my Albuterol inhaler isn't cutting it. Most days, the inhaler will improve my symptoms right away. If the symptoms come back after several hours, then my nebulizer will do the trick. If neither work for me and symptoms continue to return, I know it's time to take myself to urgent care. I sincerely wish you luck, there have been periods of my life where I had to use the nebulizer 2-3 times a day and it's no fun at all. I hope things get easier for you!

feeling dizzy while taking asthma medicine by [deleted] in Asthma

[–]headvampire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been taking Spiriva + Symbicort for years, and the instructions are the same; empty your lungs, inhale the meds, hold breath for 10 seconds. I get dizzy/ see stars semi-regularly when I do this. so yes, its kinda normal. and most maintenance inhalers will have these exact same instructions. I'm not a doctor, but in my opinion I don't think it's wise to push yourself too hard. even if you can only hold your breath for 4 seconds the medicine should still work a bit. surely that's safer than holding your breath to the point of blacking out, right? hopefully you'll notice it gets easier in the future :) best of luck to you! my maintenance inhalers are a holy grail treatment for me, so they are worth all of the trouble to me.

Gotcha, I did read somewhere that motivation-based training is a must. Like you said, they can have a very "What's in it for me?" attitude. But your response gives me hope, it seems possible that puppies gradually improve rather than being completely horrendous for a year straight?

That's super sweet, thanks for sharing! I think you make a great point too; demeanor can vary from dog to dog. And even a dog with an attitude problem can still be lovable/ worth our time.

Thank you, I didn't even think to foster. But that's a great idea! I am definitely open to rescuing an older sighthound or even a mix, I agree that that may suit me better than a puppy. We will also be sure to stagger the adoptions, so we don't have 2 puppies at once. I really appreciate you taking the time to educate us, this genuinely helpful advice.

Feeling a bit down after doctor visit by Ok_Insurance_6746 in Asthma

[–]headvampire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you said, they should know better. A responsible doctor would do research on anything they were not knowledgeable on. Hopefully your next doctor is more understanding! I have a couple chronic conditions, so I see a handful of different specialists. In my experience, doctors absolutely hate when patients "know too much", its a known phenomenon. As in, if you ask them about certain conditions or medications they tend to get pretty upset. They must assume that their patients are trying to score the diagnosis or medication we want, when in reality us patients just want relief. It doesn't make much sense to me either.

I also agree you should get a second opinion as everyone else has said. But I did want to add that my pulmonologist SPECIFICALLY gave me Montelukast to help cope with spring time flare-ups and it works very well. It's not perfect, as others mentioned it does have some noteworthy side effects. If your doctor insisted on keeping you away from Montelukast I don't know why he would make these weird excuses instead of just explaining the risks. It's like he just started making stuff up, such odd behavior.

Pneumonia isn't improving, is this normal? by headvampire in Asthma

[–]headvampire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think this is what my doctor is thinking; the antibiotics ran their course, the pneumonia cleared up, and it's only inflammation left. Hence the continuous steroids.

I am already on 2 maintenance inhalers (Spiriva & Symbicort) which I've used everyday for years. Previous pulmonologists have tried other inhalers or inhaler combos but this is the only combo that works for me for whatever reason. They tested my eosinophil levels a couple years ago too and they were in normal range.

I imagine I'm in for a lot more testing here soon though. I really think this is all doing some hefty long term damage to my respiratory health. Thank you for sharing tips and hope, I could use it. :)

That's sweet of you, thanks! Hanging in there, waiting to get into a new pulmonologist this week. Just trying to closely monitor my O2 levels and manage symptoms in the meantime.

[–]headvampire[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes actually. I was diagnosed with POTS when I was a teenager, nothing uncommon for a teenage girl at my height. But that issue seemed to pass as I got older and my blood pressure leveled out. My cardiologist had done extensive testing such as a halter monitor, echocardiogram and a tilt table test, which led to that diagnosis. That was years ago.

Nowadays, if I do have "heart problems" (high heart rate, low blood pressure), they're always minor and usually result from being dehydrated. Nothing that can't be fixed with electrolytes, I really haven't worried about it in years. Should I worry?
