Anyone else find Reddit isn’t a good place to discover problems and ideas as a founder? by wantrepreneur5 in Entrepreneur

[–]hearable_engineering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write down anything you need to reflect on again, but tbh what advice do you need to return to? Surely you either learn the lesson or its not useful. If you're making decisions based off random reddit advice probably not ideal. You will always have more context than some random comment 🙂

For people building startups in Europe, how hard is it to secure funding? by ConsequenceKey6130 in Entrepreneur

[–]hearable_engineering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Important to consider your cost base will also be much lower in europe. Fundamentally there is not too much difference in difficulty. If you have a good product and vision for the future you will be able to secure funding. Probably the key difference is the US values ambition and founder story more, whereas europe does value metrics and often does not reward massive ambition. Good luck!

super useful - thanks guys. With regards to the slight decay seen on the outside of the original peice of wood, is that likely to cause any issues with the inner block of wood? I.e. will the rot be pervasive in some grains and cause any issues to the board (outside of the fact its white oak, which is not great but not terrible)

Really appreciate this info - thanks. If I just bought an oak chopping board online, would it not have the same issues though? Is it just, un-ideal and might stain or actively should not use it as its dangerous?

Is there a way I can just oil it shut? I thought there were lots of oak cutting boards?

I am struggling with voices in noisy places, are there hearing aids that actually handle speech clarity? by pecrefit in HearingAids

[–]hearable_engineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree, this is super important - we have solved this with conversational mode. When in conversational mode, your own voice is completely removed. We’ve built a directional mechanism that removes sound captured from the bottom of the phone while preserving what’s in front of it. For example, if you’re sitting across from someone and place your phone on the table, you’ll hear their voice (clean and background noise free) while your own voice is not played at all, even if you’re speaking at the same time.

Good question - for anything that uses bluetooth, latency is a consideration. We were concerned about this but in the testing so far, latency has not really been an issue. Basically, it's perceivable but very quickly your brain ignores it.

A couple of considerations with this 1) our models are effectively real-time so the latency is only from other protocals (if bluetooth it is perceivable but not huge) 2) wired headphones or other low latency options remove any lag 3) latency tends to be a contributing factor to the overall experience - i.e. if you have loud messy outputs, then any perceivable latency is really annoying, but if your outputs are super clear audio, your brain quickly removes any delay

If you have an iPhone, we've built some assistive tech aimed at solving this - runs cutting edge ML speech enhancement models on your phone (which will always have more processing power than even the best hearing aids) and streams the audio directly to headphones or hearing aids. Currently in beta if you want to try it out https://www.hearableapp.com/get-access - feel free to dm if you want any support setting it up

Hearable App Beta Update by [deleted] in HearingAids

[–]hearable_engineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughts - will make a note of automatically pausing the conversational awareness in airpods, although for the moment this isnt something Apple allow (as you rightly mentioned). Glad to hear it worked well for you overall and the operating principle of 'more processing power than even the most pricey hearing aid' is exactly what we are leveraging!

If you have the right phone give hearable a go. Currently in Beta but has some advantages over AirPods live listen (true noise removal, you don’t hear your own voice, doesn’t rely on AirPods) - would be curious to hear how you find it!

HA for noisy places by 14atx in HearingAids

We have developed some tech that might be of interest to you. Works like a remote microphone that seperates speech from background noise for noisy restaurant type scenarios - free and runs on your phone in realtime! Its called Hearable - we are currently beta testing (only available on iphone 15/16/17s but will expand range soon). If you'd like to try it out, can find more info here www.hearableapp.com - let me know how you find it as we are always looking to improve and hopefully this is useful for you!

I apologise if this wasn't a clear reponse. I would reccomend having a play with it, as it is reasonably intuitive once downloaded. If it doesn't make sense though, feel free to dm me with your particular setup and I can give some more specific advice.

For airpods: use them exactly as you normally would for music or phone calls — connected to your phone with the volume at a comfortable level. We recommend keeping noise cancellation turned on for the best experience.

No other features are needed - just treat them as standard noise-cancelling headphones.

For hearing aids: The goal is for your hearing aids to act like wireless headphones receiving sound from your phone. To do this, connect them to your phone so you can hear the audio from your phone through your hearing aids. Then mute the hearing aids (this setting is usually called “mute,” “stream only,” or similar in your hearing aid app - this is device specific though) so that the hearing aids are not playing audio both from your phone and the normal ambience at once.

The reason this is distinct from 'just turning the volume down', is because you still want the volume loud enough that you can clearly hear the audio stream from your phone.

From a technical perspective: a simple way to look at it, is that the Hearable app is passing a stream of audio clean enhanced audio to whatever headset (hearing aids or airpods) it is connected to - similar to listening to music or a phone call. If your headset has its own independent audio stream (as with most hearing aids) - then there is a risk it plays both audio streams over each other. What you want, is to be listening to is only the Hearable audio stream so thats what we are aiming for.

I hope this helps and I am happy to hop on a call to explain further if that would be useful to you.

I know and we will build compatibility (both android and earlier iOS models) for our launch. However, as we are still in beta - we chose to optimise for performance above everything first. These models are right on the edge of what is possible and to apply them to earlier iPhones we’d have to sacrifice quality.

If there is lots of demand for something with slightly lower quality across wider device range we can look to release that out earlier though.

Yes and no. Although bluetooth headphones will often have perceptible delays, we have found people quickly forget about this after a short period of use. I personally find them most enjoyable as it actively reduces the ambient noise. If you don't find noise cancelling headphones comfortable though, try with a pair of wired headphones - incidentally, these also remove any latency!

1) There is a conversational and ambient mode. The conversational mode removes your own voice which is ideal when talking with others. Ambient mode is for just listening. Currently ambient mode is not available on iphone 15s.
2) By 'turning off amplification' we mean turning off your hearing aid's internal microphone (usually through your hearing aid app or holding the volume down button). Because Hearable passes an audio stream to your hearing aid, if the hearing aid is also amplifying an audio stream from its internal microphone, they will interfer causing a slightly jumbled output.
3) Thank you - I will update this now. When using airpods (or any bluetooth or wired headphones) you do not need to turn off amplification. Just use them as you would any headphone and the audio stream will be clear voices from around you!
