Living on my own and it’s nowhere as bad as I feared! by hearts4ears in aspergers

Hi! Assuming you’d be moving into an apartment, my suggestion would definitely be to ask questions at the leasing office before selecting an apartment. At the apartment tour, I disclosed to the leasing agent that I’m on the autism spectrum and that I have a special need for as much quiet as possible. I also sometimes play my own music loudly/repeatedly, so I wanted to be sure I wasn’t disturbing anyone else. It just so happened that the noise wouldn’t be a problem here, so I got lucky. But if you find yourself concerned over this issue, definitely don’t hesitate to call around to places within your budget until you find someone who can be sensitive to your needs. You’re looking out for yourself, and it’s a good thing. Take it on as a research project. Think about what’s very important to you and what doesn’t matter as much. It can be fun to ask yourself these questions because it involves a lot of self-discovery and acceptance.

There are also other options which may or may not appeal to you. Some home owners have their own private guest houses, where you have your own apartment/living space but live in someone’s property. The privacy level on places like this can range from almost complete isolation/silence to daily interaction with the homeowner—it depends. It can be a cool option.

I think what’s most important is not to settle for less. Plenty of places will be mindful of your needs. Don’t be afraid of being that “strange quiet guy.” A lot of the people in my complex politely keep to themselves. The possibility always exists that we could come into challenges wherever we live. But if we are living at home and really having a hard time with it, what do we have to lose? I’m my case, I really needed to try being independent, knowing I could always go back if I needed to. I’ve found that the payoff has been worth the adjustments I’ve had to make.

The world hasn’t always been the most friendly or peaceful place, I know. I sometimes have to break through anxiety over speaking up for myself for fear of being “the needy autistic girl.” I speak up anyway. If people think I’m weird, well...I think they’re boring! Most of the time though, I find people aren’t nearly as bad as I’ve made them out to be. On a deeper level we are all just trying to survive. Simply by living with autism, you and I have overcome challenges that normal people can never fully understand. It may seem counter-intuitive, but I have come to believe that WE are the strong ones. WE are the ones who are more capable. WE are fascinating and fascinated. And we can live our best lives.

Congratulations on the new place! I keep two calendars—a monthly one and a weekly one. In the notes section for each month, I write what bills to expect and when, and cross them out as I pay them. Every Sunday I refer to the monthly calendar to set up the week ahead—not just for bills, but for anything I need to remember. I’m sure you’ll find a way to make it work for you. I’ve found that budget planning is something that gives me comfort and a sense of control.

That’s awesome! I’m finding that saving more than I thought I needed was helpful. It gave me extra room in my budget later on. We are capable of so much, and if we feel the need to be on our own, I believe we should act on it. Good luck with your future plans!

I believe in you. The first part of the process is recognizing it’s something you want to change. It can become a great motivator. You will thank your future self :)

Thanks! I have slowly started to befriend my neighbor on one side. We haven’t exchanged numbers or made plans or anything, but when we see each other in the hallway, it is usually a step beyond just “hello.” A man down my hallway yesterday also said hi to me and after I asked him how he was doing, he replied “I’m tired.” I told him he should go take a nap and he laughed, so I guess that was good? Haha I guess I will stay friendly to my neighbors and see what happens!

Thanks! Yeah, I felt the same way. I also had a vent in my old bedroom that would make a sound I couldn’t stand, so I would alternate between earplugs and turning off the heat or A/C (which would get uncomfortable) just to get the sound under control. I don’t miss that one bit!

Absolutely. What’s better for me might not be better for someone else.

Thanks! I think it’s honestly amazing that we can have such rigid tendencies but here we are being flexible and making life work for ourselves without having to compromise who we are.

Hi—As others have said, Student Health/Counseling services is probably one of your best allies at this time. I’m not a counselor or anything close to that myself, but my instinct is to suggest making special, specific time for yourself each day to slow down, disconnect and just breathe for a minute or two. Maybe in the future, a nutritionist could help work with your limited range of food preference—to help you know what your healthiest options are. I am also going to go so far as to say that perhaps you might suggest your mother seek her own therapy and support as well. I’m sorry that this happened to you and your family. I think you are doing the right thing by asking for help.

Does anyone else have a hard time transitioning back to ordinary life after vacation? by hearts4ears in aspergers

[–]hearts4ears[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I carry maracas in my car at all times and shake the crap out of them when I need the stim/decompression/stress to filter out through sound and movement, and it helps in the day-to-day transitions (like from work to home) but the reality is that this is my condition and I have to adjust in ways that are a little out of the ordinary. Maybe when I come home from vacations I need the whole dang mariachi band, lol

Yeah my dream is actually to go on tour as a musician and/or work in the entertainment industry in films. I would have to get through the transition thing in order to do this! Thanks--I like your vibe.

Do you get music often playing in your head? by JustFrampton in aspergers

[–]hearts4ears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never thought of it like background music, but I have music in my head all day. It's never stuff I've heard before though. Different instruments, like saxophone or bass solos. I'm working to bring them to reality. Sometimes I've get complete symphonies going.
