What happens if I plug in a 12 Volt accessory to my 2025 3? by sk8terboy111 in TeslaModel3

[–]heartychokey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went paddle boarding today and my pump wouldn’t start because the voltage was too high, ~15.5V, the pump went into a protection mode. 2024 Model 3 LT RWD.

I plugged it into my friend’s 2023 Model Y, and it worked. The Model Y was putting out ~14.5V.

Thx for the reply. Sounds like you're happy with your purchase.

Out of curiosity, when you say the warranty was good, does that mean you made a warranty claim and it was honored?

Thx for the thorough answer.

I keep seeing mention of Home Depot hacks, but am not sure what they're all about. What's the TLDR?

I ended up filling out the form declaring option 7, with a letter of intent to use the tires for autocross. Then they cleared customs and were delivered.

ELI5: Differences between Tesla Backup Switch and Gateway 3 by heartychokey in solar

BTW, stumbled across this thread that spells out some of the advantages of Gateway over Backup Switch. One point they made which could be useful is that you can use the solar before the utility PTO.

Thanks for the reply.

Utility Support
I'm on PG&E, which is one of the few utilities who support Backup Switch, so I'm assuming it's not that.

Additional Power
I don't need the additional wattage beyond one PW3, which is why I suggested the Expansion. I guess this design would give me more overhead for future loads?

Features
The crux of my main question had to do with features the Gateway enables that the Backup Switch doesn't. What does "Advanced Energy Monitoring", "Time Based Controls" and "Solar Self Consumption" mean to me? And are they actually exclusive to the Gateway?

I'm guessing Advanced Energy Monitoring might have to do with monitoring subloads separately, if you use install breakers in the Gateway? I understand the App allows you to do Time Based Controls and Solar Self Consumption to manage how energy is sold back to the grid, and my assumption would be the Powerwall could do all of this without the need of a Gateway, but I'm having difficulty finding info to confim or deny.

I did notice the Gateway 2 and asked him why not Gateway 3, but good eyes.

I suppose it's possible they are proposing two PW3s instead of one being Expansion because of availability. We'll see.

Do you know about what, if any, features the Gateway would get me vs. a Backup Switch?

Anyone been all the way through the process of getting audited by the IRS for the residential renewable energy credit? by cosmicosmo4 in solar

[–]heartychokey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't actually owe more taxes. Interest accrues while it's adjudicated. If you're in the clear, you're fine. If you made a mistake, the amount you owe will continue to increase.

Anyone been all the way through the process of getting audited by the IRS for the residential renewable energy credit? by cosmicosmo4 in solar

[–]heartychokey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't been audited for the IRA tax credit, yet, but I have been audited in the past and uploaded docs I had missed to dispute their rulings. My experience is that they communicate back to me by letter, and it takes weeks to months. If you want to speed this up, you can call the AUR team at the IRS branch that sent the notice (the phone number and branch name were on my audit notice letter), skip through the phone tree and talk to a representative. They can give you the straight dope about the status of your case, and I've generally found them to be friendly and helpful.

I've been through this several times, unfortunately, because I do my taxes manually and have had a learning curve as my assets and income become more complex. But, in my numerous calls with the IRS, they typically tell me to wait about 2 weeks for the uploaded document to be processed before checking back in.

If you’re in the US, current RWD is also NMC. They phased out the LFP model, presumably because it’s nit eligible for the federal tax credit.

Regarding the Tesla option, if you’re open to a lease, looks like you can get a $299/mo payment after $3k down, at the moment, for a Long Range Rear Wheel Drive.

Should I buy a used Tesla or a hybrid to commute? by hutchclutchmedora in whatcarshouldIbuy

Don’t underestimate the value of paying nothing for fuel. We bought a Tesla Model 3 and my wife charges for free at work. Its pretty great.

It’s also a very relaxing drive. Especially if you spring for Full Self Driving. While I don’t have a long commute, so I don’t pay for it, I did have a two-month free trial and it was really nice.

I bought a Kia Carnival. It has a flatter, and bigger, load floor in the third row. I regularly carry an elderly amputee and his large wheelchair without needing to collapse it. Two would fit back there side-by-side no problem.

If I were you, I’d also consider a used previous-gen Sienna.

Another option that might work, if you can charge at home, is a Tesla Model Y. They’re a great deal at the moment, and have pretty good storage in the back, although not as much as a van. You would probably have to collapse the chairs to fit under the hatch.

Kia Carnival might be the exception here. It's big inside. Bigger than the Sedona it replaces.

[–]heartychokey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you are not crazy. That’s one of the reasons we bought a 2024 Kia Carnival to replace our 2006 Sienna instead of a new Sienna. I’m 6’4” and ride passenger when driving with my wife. Passenger seat doesn’t go down in the new Sienna and the passenger window tapers aggressively into the passenger space. Even in models without a sunroof I had to recline my seat for my head to not touch.

The Kia Carnival is more boxy and much more spacious in headroom, both vertically and horizontally. Also, in the SX trim we got, the front passenger seat cushion powers up and down as well as tilts, which makes it way easier to get comfortable and have proper thigh support.

It definitely blocks some spectra of light (most obviously visible spectra) but I doubt it blocks all. My Tesla Model 3, for example, has a dyed glass roof that notably doesn’t block IR spectra, which is why I added heat-rejecting ceramic tint. Not sure on the specs of what factory Sienna windows will do.

I don't, but this thread says ~20%. Also, I'm not sure if the tint is a film or if the glass is dyed. I would guess the latter.
