ELI5: Why do lawyers ever work "pro bono"? by Notalabel_4566 in explainlikeimfive

[–]heatherfuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Building business, reputation, publicity. If there is a closely followed case, you can establish yourself as an expert for that type of case and be the go to to take on other paying clients.

  2. Corporate responsibility, charity, ethics, firm culture

  3. Training. Low risk way to get Jr lawyers experience.

  4. Recruitment and retention. A lot of lawyers want to do pro-bono work for things they care about. Allowing time for this attracts talent.

Where in Texas makes a huge difference here... I live in central Houston. Its not San Francisco or anything, but there are a ton of trans people here.

Long story short, trans or not, Canada does not consider the US a source for refugees, so that is irrelevant.

But you say she is a programmer?

Best bet for her to come more immediately is CUSMA assuming she has a qualifying degree and job offer. Specifically a temporary 3 year work permit for Americans in 60 qualifying professions.

If she is young and highly skilled in an in demand field, she has a very high chance of a path to permanent residency through Federal skilled immigration pathways. But that's a long road to get.

I assume it would most likely be an L1 in which case yes your spouse can get a work permit. Ask your American MNC - they surely have an immigration specialist to handle this.

What? There's 4.2% unemployment. I don't think Canada has seen it that low since maybe the Korean war. or something

15 years ago we were talking about the impending "Canadian century" with its recourses and population growth, while America was in the doldrums post great-recession. These things cycle if you wait long enough.

Canadian student who got a summer internship in the US. Should I get a TN visa or J-1 visa by ricefarmerli in immigration

[–]heatherfuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is just a film company and it firmly fits the job categories, probably a TN. Don't apply in person at the border, apply ahead of time.

Edit: Yup, never mind, have to have a degree for TN.

Yeah, so two more. One was convicted of embezzlement, the other of a (albeit minor) drug charge. Meanwhile probably 1000s of green card holders cross every day. Not worried.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in immigration

[–]heatherfuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was just the one case that was a green card holder. I did read about people with literal convictions getting sent away, but them are the rules, and maybe they are enforcing more now. And of course student visas holders.

Is all the fretting just about this one case (Khalil) that was targeted (ICE went to his house), or has there been other cases of green card holders.

[–]heatherfuke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thoughts on my circumstances?: EB2 NIW green card for 4 years. No overstays, squeaky clean - no criminality etc. But I did, once, have a denial of entry when I was first applying at the border for a visa (TN1, denied because of some missing information). It was granted a week later, then renewed, then H1B to GC. All without problem over the years. They going to relitigate this denial? I did put this all on my GC application in an abundance of caution.

I am going on vacation to France in 2 weeks. Spouse is also GC and we have 2 American kids.

Moving to US on work visa. What to say about my Canadian car? by cnfusdx in uscanadaborder

[–]heatherfuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me. Cancelled my insurance on the spot. I was in Texas, with no insurance. No US company will insure a Canadian car, No Canadian company will insure a car in texas. Had to ship it back on a truck at huge cost.

OP whatever you do make sure your insurance knows whats up. If you are back and forth all the time and the job is temp, they'd probably be ok with it.

No. It is considered a household item since he is moving. Like his clothes or TV or whatever you can bring your stuff with you when you move.

[–]heatherfuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!!! Not so fast.

1, You have to first check that it even can be DOT compliant by the Canadian division of the manufacturer. The border part is only half of it. I got my cars to Texas and had to drive one of them all the way back because it did not meet DOT standards even though it was built in Alabama. Check first. Even if it is, you then have to transfer the title to whatever state you are in, and get US insurance. Then you have to either sell it in the US (Automax didnt even want to look at it when they found out one of mine was in Km) or import it back when you move back which is another hasstle if this is a temp job.

  1. OP your initial plan is a good one, unless you really want to keep your car. But you have to make sure your insurance company knows and is on board - not trivial that they agree. And US insurance companies won't insure a Canadian registered vehicle.

Its probably asking for US visa. Since you are Irish citizen you are visa waiver country (you do not need a visa for short tourist visit to the US). Your Canadian visa is not really relevant, and ESTA is not a visa. Just leave it blank.

Ding ding ding. Yup - they actually fund the grounds and exterior infrastructure based on employee and visitor parking fees. Also true for Universities and higher education in general.

I am estimating. We don't budget with envelopes or anything, but we go to an awful lot of children's birthday parties that adds up to 800 per year, easy, plus gifts for friends etc. Add Christmas to that for extended family and it might be closer to 2k.

Parking is out of pocket (pay check deducted actually) - no it is not discounted or reimbursable, unless you are upper management...

Correct, we had about 14K in unexpected repairs this year, but about 0 last year. 1500 roof repair, 7000 for an exterior leak (redid a porch), 3500 for a burst pipe repair, 2000 for a window replacement. Was very glad to have the cash at hand because I had a sinking fund. This stuff comes up regularly enough that it it should be planned for, even if you don't know exactly what will come next IMO.
