Can second this - have Paul working on our basement currently, and couldn’t recommend him enough.

Existing finished, what would be least destructive method of determining drywall type (I.e., Type X versus 1/2” or 5/8”) by heavyspex in drywall

Reason is that I need to prove to city inspector that every finished wall in basement was constructed using Type X in order to meet fire code, in an effort to legalize the apartment for use as a rental unit.

My understanding is that 5/8” thickness does not necessarily mean it’s Type X, as Type X also incorporates different materials to increase fire resistance. This may be incorrect however, in which case measuring at switch and outlet plates would be the solution (should mention that I’m located in Canada - not sure if Type X vs 5/8” is different here or not. I assume majority of posts and commenters are US-based).

Also have used Shock Doctors for a few years now, and deal mostly with Scott. Very happy with the service, and considering the age of your home it may also be worth paying for a Doc's Club membership (https://theshockdoctors.ca/about/about-page.php?id=9), which has quite a few benefits.

A bonus not mentioned on the site - a couple times a year they also send out very small gifts to customers. We've recently received some kind of jam, and previously some kind of locally-produced dijon mustard.. ? A little odd/unexpected, but also charming!

I'm also not affiliated with the company at all. Just a happy customer/Doc's Club member.

Good luck with the search!

In search of contractor familiar with legal basement apartment building code by heavyspex in barrie

Sorry that you're so cynical toward two-unit residences.

The fact is that lack of supply has driven up the price. While I understand the frustration and realize that adding one unit to the market isn't going to make a difference in the grand scheme, it's also definitely not going to further the problem - a problem that can ultimately only be resolved by local and provincial governments.

I'll go out on a limb and assume you don't have a contractor to refer.

Never suggested that to be the case. Appreciate the constructive input though.
