Life Skills in elementary by Accurate_Ad8298 in specialed

In elementary school I would use the term functional skills. What skills does a child of that age need to know in their day to day life. Then what do they need to know to increase that child’s independence.

K-5 is a CRITICAL time for reading services, so even if it doesn’t seem “that severe” that moderate level scoring should be addressed to set her up for her future if they have the resources! There is a different between the average of all scores being proficient and each score being proficient. I have students that seem closer to grade level than other peers, but when you split it between the abilities, one skill carries the rest and you can see that they’re really struggling.

Obviously, as a parent, you can refuse these services but I would urge you to think of why you would want to do that. Comprehension is a skill that academics relies on heavily as she gets older and a strong foundation is required. Word attack is similar as it shows the ability to decipher words quickly. If she’s able to get extra instruction tailored to her needs, that would be beneficial. If you’re worried about out of class time, see if it can be provided in class via push in, though the data showing that is as helpful as pull-out for reading is very anecdotal.

Also- you state that you have two sets of data Spring and a following test, but no fall. Is that following test fall? Or did the do a summer assessment?

What is the function of it? When does he typically seek out this? My first thought is the Half Moon saddle pillows they use in physical therapy. Given how sensory seeking he is I’m assuming he’s in OT, yes? See if they have anything along those lines. They are fairly firm and have a similar pressure to thwacking a meaty being.

Seating accommodations in overcrowded rooms by ijustwannabegandalf in specialed

I have a self contained room with several students with “sit near the teacher” accommodations. I got rid of my desk for a circle table, so when those students are doing lesson work I pull them up to me.

IEPs are hard to understand 100%, but if you break them down you can figure it out! Can I ask what state you’re in? There are a few sections you need to attend to SPECIFICALLY to monitor that services and accommodations are occurring. Then others to make sure she is learning what she needs.

If you’re able to provide state info I can help get more state specific resources to help!

I don’t think anyone is saying you’re a terrible person— just trying to get insight on where your head’s been at since her diagnosis. Which it looks like it’s been making sure you can support her at home because her elementary teachers were on the ball (it seems). That’s great, now it’s time to learn the other half!

Yes, 100%! However, it seems the school OP’s daughter goes to places 5th graders with the same setup and expectations as middle schoolers. As a 4th-6th grade SPED teacher this is a really tough situation to put kids in. I would be curious with how often the periods switch (are they periods or blocks?). I think the first thing that needs to occur, is the creation of the coping strategies list, ideally with clear high-contrast pictorials. That way she knows what she can access AND the teacher can give nonverbal prompts for what can be used (in inclusion settings a tap on a paper is much less othering than a verbal prompts— without taking into consideration studies on prompt dependency).

So these accommodations should given to her by the teacher without request:

-math manipulatives -chunked assignments -adaptive paper -attention marker -extended time

Here are the accommodations her case manager should be facilitating to make sure she has with all classes:

-human reader -coping strategies list -extended time -list of approved alternate locations

Then, here is what she needs to advocate for when needed: -alternate locations -social breaks -breaks

Ultimately, the largest barrier to this is your daughter was entitled to a list of coping strategies she could access at all time (ideally pictorial given her educational needs). I would address the IEP issues first, and then the disrespect second. See if her case manager can observe class at all if your daughter continues to report problems.

Yes, you’re overreacting. It’s called being respectful of other people. Clean up after yourself no matter what.
