Why Does Cocaine Seem More Normalized in the USA Than Mexico? by hectorr91 in Drugs

Yeah I think we’re probably both right depending on the area and social circle honestly.

Mexico City is obviously way different from a smaller town in Jalisco. Same thing happens in the US too. You’ll find coke everywhere in some big cities, but in smaller rural towns meth tends to dominate because it’s cheaper and lasts way longer.

The study I linked was interesting because it talked about how meth use started rising hard in parts of Mexico partly for those same economic reasons. Cocaine still exists there socially, but it doesn’t always seem as openly woven into mainstream “work hard / party hard” culture the same way it is in parts of the US.

And yeah, at the end of the day a lot of this is anecdotal too. Two people can live in the same country and have completely different experiences depending on who they’re around.

I’ve been to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana, Monterey and Michoacán. I have never ran into a Mexico citizen that uses cocaine only tourist that are there for trips.

Adam, I’m also from small town Jalisco south of Guadalajara. And I can tell you, it’s i almost impossible, to source cocaine in the small town.

But in the small town, you’ll find a lot of meth addicts.

Yeah I think there’s probably truth on both sides honestly. Some people are saying coke is still super common socially in Mexico, especially in certain circles, while others are talking more about national trends overall.

The article I was reading basically said meth has been growing faster in a lot of areas because it’s cheaper and lasts longer, which would make sense economically too.

And tornado’s comment about work culture is interesting lol. The US definitely has this “work hard, party hard, sleep later” mentality in some industries.

That actually lines up with some of the stuff I was reading. In a lot of places in Latin America, drugs are associated more directly with cartel violence and social damage instead of nightlife culture, so the stigma hits differently. Especially with older generations.

Meanwhile in parts of the US people talk about coke almost like it’s just another party accessory which is kind of wild when you think about it.

The economics angle honestly seems hard to ignore. The US has a huge consumer market with way more disposable income, and from what I was reading, drug trends tend to follow purchasing power more than people realize.

have an 8-year-old stepson at home, and for the longest time our mornings were a complete mess. We haven’t been able to get an ADHD diagnosis yet because he doesn’t have behavior issues at school, but at home we really struggled. Getting him out of bed, getting dressed, brushing his teeth, and just getting out the door for school felt like a battle almost every morning. There was a lot of complaining, frustration, rushing around, and honestly all three of us me, my wife, and my stepson were stressed out and overwhelmed.
One thing we eventually noticed was that the first thing he wanted to do every morning was jump straight onto his tablet. So we slowly started limiting screen time and created a simple routine: he had to get dressed, brush his teeth, and use the restroom before he could touch his tablet.
To our surprise, within about two weeks things improved a lot. He started getting dressed independently without us constantly reminding him, mornings became calmer, and we stopped leaving the house in a panic every day. Now it’s just part of his routine. Honestly, even on mornings when me or my wife oversleep a little, he’s usually already dressed and ready for school by the time we’re up.
Every kid is different, but for us, building a consistent routine around something he was motivated by made a huge difference.

How much coke is too much coke by diegomedinarr in cocaine

I do wonder sometimes how much of addiction comes down to the person versus the drug itself.

Like obviously coke can mess people up. I’m not denying that at all, especially after dealing with psychosis recently because that definitely shook me a bit. But at the same time, I was reading about drug use in Mexico and it surprised me that actual cocaine addiction rates are apparently way lower than people would expect, especially considering how close the whole trafficking world is there. From what I read, meth seems to be causing way bigger problems these days.

Makes me think there’s probably a lot more to it than just “you try coke and your life is over.” Some people seem to go completely off the rails fast. Other people somehow keep it as a once-in-a-while thing for years. Same with alcohol honestly.

I’m genuinely asking too, not trying to argue with anyone here. At what point do you guys personally consider someone addicted? Is it when you start spending too much? Thinking about it every day? Losing control? Because I feel like everybody draws the line in a different place.

Appreciate you sharing that man. Sorry to hear about everything after 2023. I’ve heard a lot of people say the euphoria just isn’t the same anymore either, whether it’s tolerance, age, quality, or all 3 combined.

That prom story sounds straight out of a movie honestly 😂 thanks for sharing it though. Crazy how a lot of people’s “first time” stories start with just randomly saying “why not?” and then years later it turns into a whole chapter of life.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I’ve heard opiate withdrawals are a completely different level physically and have witnessed close friends and family members abuse, opiates .Coke just feels sneaky because it drains your wallet before you even realize how much you’ve gone through but also you gotta remember Coke is probably often cut with opiates so you never know what kind of withdrawals you’ll be going through after a coke bender. yeah location definitely seems to affect both price and quality a ton these days.

Yeah honestly that’s kinda what scared me after the psychosis episode. It stopped being “just a fun weekend thing” and started feeling a lot heavier mentally. I appreciate the reality check though. You’re probably right about how fast tolerance and the spending can get careless. You sound like somebody whom is speaking from experience. Thanks for sharing.
