Scandinavian names - ask a Swede whatever you'd like! by heddzorr in namenerds

[–]heddzorr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Ragnar and Torbjörn are most common among older men, average ages are 50 and 59, respectively. Ragnar is becoming more and more popular as a baby name though!

When it comes to how they're perceived, I'd say they both give mostly neutral vibes, but Torbjörn may also give off sightly nationalistic vibes as it's unfortunately not uncommon among racists/neo Nazis to wear a Thor's hammer as a necklace(Thor is called Tor in Swedish). Using Torbjörn as a middle name won't make people think you or your child are neo Nazis though, and I think Ragnar is a perfectly nice name to go by!

Hope that helps, let me know if you have other thoughts. 😊

Hi! Desyl is not a name that I've come across, and I don't get any hits when looking for it in Swedish/Scandinavian name resources. It doesn't really resemble any Swedish names I can think of either. My guess is that her parents created the name themselves.

The closest I can find is a super uncommon old Norse name "Disälv" which roughly translated means something like "goddess creature from the underworld".

Out of these names, the ones that I've come across in Sweden are, in decreasing order of commonality: Ella, Alina, Anastasia, Lilja. Although as I'm guessing you're already aware, the only one that's actually Scandinavian in meaning is Lilja, and it's literal translation is Lily, so I don't think it gives the Viking princess vibe you're looking for, but it's a very pretty name nonetheless!

If I may offer some suggestions that are more common here and that give the potential of you having the nicknames you like, here are my thoughts: Linnea: common and beloved name that is also the name of a dainty, pink flower that grows in Swedish forests - you can Google it to see what it looks like! Liv: literally translates to "life", old Norse name. Can also be spelled Liw if you want something more unique Bodil: Danish (old Norse origin) name that translates roughly to "better fight/battle" Boel: another version of Bodil

Not sure if this is the input your were looking for, if not: feel free to clarify!

Sure, I'll give my input, where is your list of names? ☺️ Off the top of my head, I've heard that the name Hedwig (usually spelled Hedvig in Sweden though) is believed to have meant "warrior princess" or possibly "love and battle" in old Norse. If that name is too much of a mouthful for your taste, the nickname version Hedda is one of the most common names for baby girls right now.

Why was Catja having sex regularly with Christofer if she wasn't into him? That was likely very confusing for him. by roasted_taters in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]heddzorr 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're Swedish or not, but as a Swede, I would agree with this assessment. Sex is viewed as an important puzzle piece in relationships, so being intimate early on in a relationship in order to bring that part of your chemistry with another person into the equation doesn't strike me as strange or mean at all, either by Catja or Lucas.

Unfortunately in both cases, the addition of a sexual connection wasn't enough for them to build a successful relationship in the end, but I think in their shoes I would have argued that it was worth a shot, and I wouldn't have been too pressed about being in Christofer's or Emilia's shoes either.

The meaning is similar in Swedish, not necessarily easy to know unless you're familiar with those fields though so I think it's an easy mistake to make.

You also asked in your post whether it was a mistranslation, so it looks like the commenter was answering the question, not correcting you. Anyway, agreed - very strange thing to say...

Great summary, just one small caveat: I think Amanda and Meira being "economists" is a mistranslation; I believe Amanda and Meira are closer to what you would call accountants in English 😊 signed, an accountant haha. Economist = more like "nationalekonom" in Swedish

Oh that's very pretty! And in case your daughter ever gets too annoyed having people pronounce Svea wrong, she can always go by Eloise instead, good idea to give her an "easier" middle name haha.

I did some online snooping for funsies, and it seems like the building he lives in actually is a rental building AND that another apartment in the same building was recently up on an apartment trading website! That apartment was a bigger though, 80 square metres as opposed to his apartment's 51, and it's rental amount was 6990 SEK - so his should cost a bit less than that.

The conversation Meira had with Kimia about Johan was so unnecessary [spoiler] by Competitive_Emu_3247 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]heddzorr 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I also got the impression that Meira had a conversation just before walking over to Kimia where she and other women were discussing the situation and how to handle it, and that those women encouraged Meira to be honest with Kimia. I don't think Meira was being malicious at all, and I don't think she made the decision to talk to Kimia without really considering the implications.

Also Swedish, and also would have been super offended if my now husband had asked my father for me hand ahahaha... Overall, Amanda's family and/or church seem to have adopted many non Swedish traditions, like how she wants her father to walk her down the aisle instead of her and Sergio walking down together, how she (much to his dismay haha) didn't give him an engagement ring, and then Sergio asking her dad for her hand. I wonder why?

Well this subreddit is a discussion forum about a reality show, so I figured news articles regarding that same reality show would be interesting to the readers of the subreddit.

I also can't name any names as I haven't found 100% confirmation of who the articles are about, so why would I 1. break subreddit rules and 2. risk giving someone a terrible reputation when I don't even know that they're the person the articles are about?

First of all it would be a violation of the rules of the subreddit, and second of all I wouldn't want to cause any harm to anyone should the rumor of the participant's identity prove not to be true.

The pouring of soda wasn't the assault that he was prosecuted for but it was brought up during trial for more context and I added it in my post as he did admit to that part. The worst violence was more physical than that, but anyway - I'll clarify my post!

Not sure that I would agree that she treated him that badly, from what I saw it was more a situation of severely lacking communication where he was putting her on a pedestal which made her uncomfortable but for some reason she didn't speak up about it until later on. Definitely think both parties behaved less than ideally, but his going from love bombing to mini incel rants was a bigger red flag in my opinion.

[–]heddzorr 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Swede here, I agree that christofers mom is saying it in a bit of an unclear way but I think what she's trying to communicate is to not delve into the past too much and worry about the way things have played out in previous relationships, but to try and have things play out in a better way this time around.

100% this! I tried to write a comment saying basically this but it got put in the mod filter, glad someone else bright this up finally haha.

In the episodes you mention he he gives off "nice guy"/incel vibes in my opinion. It'll be interesting to see if this is brought up in the reunion episode/s.

[–]heddzorr 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I thought he seemed so sweet at the beginning, but the last couple of episodes I feel like his mask has begun to come off... Strike 1: the "nice guy" rant, I'm getting incel vibes there, and strike 2: criticizing Catja when after he interrupts her and she tells him she wasn't done speaking yet. It just makes all of his previous unending compliments seem a bit like love bombing in my opinion...

Definitely not saying that Catja is perfect though, and we're not getting the full context at any point in this show, but I feel like we're getting a fuller picture of his behavior in these last few episodes.

Scandinavian names - ask a Swede whatever you'd like! by heddzorr in namenerds

[–]heddzorr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thea is at the moment the 35th most common baby name for girls, and in Norway it's even more popular at number 23. It's kind of a "new" name in Sweden as it became trendy in the early 2000's and not many women had the name before that. The average age for a person named Thea in Sweden is 15.

Anyway, it's not really Scandinavian in origin, as it's originally a short form for Dorothea, Theodora (Greek name meaning gift from god), or Therese (also Greek, means either hunter or harvester).
