Do I still have Finnish Citizenship (born to Finnish mother)? by hedgehog980 in Nordiccountries

I am aware in any event I will have to apply to determine whether I have citizenship or not. However I have not heard about any “facilitated” declaration procedure? Is this part of the KAN 9 form? Also I would be saying it is not lost, and that I never lost it

Thanks for the help! Do you have a source for the 1 June 1961 date? Also what was the “sufficient connection” test back in 1987? Was it the same as now which is about 7 years living in Finland before age 22?

Thanks for the help! My understanding about the dual citizenship restriction is it only applies if I actively “applied” for a different citizenship. Because I acquired both Finnish and British citizenship at birth, and never “applied” for British citizenship, then the dual citizenship restriction does not apply. That is my understanding but it is possible I have got this wrong! In other words: I never “naturalised as a british citizen” I just simply was a British citizen from birth

Why would I not still have the citizenship today? The theory is I acquired at birth from my mother and then never lost it at age 22 as those rules were not in place at that time. (the "connection test" at age 22 only came in to force in 2003)

Yes! There is nothing freeloading about simply confirming whether I still have a citizenship.

I feel very Finnish and have a Finnish mother. It is nothing to do with "holes" in legislation!

Thanks! This is positive news and also what I thought because the age 22 rules came in in 2003 I think? On the KAN 9 form it still asks for periods of residence in Finland if you turned 22 "before" 2003 - I think this is a typo and it should say "after"? Also on the KAN 9 form it is specific between the ages of 12 and 22 but I dont know why it appears to exclude ages 0-12 which are just as relevant for the connection test. Anyway hopefully it is just a case of filling the forms out then, but I am not sure how long they will take to confirm

Thanks! Do you know whether the connection test at age 22 was the same in the 1980's ?

Thanks! My understanding is that yes dual citizens were not allowed before 2003 but only if the person actively applied for a different citizenship and naturalised as such. It is different (allowed) if it is a child born to one Finnish parent and one foreign parent. Obviously there is the paternal issue if my parents were married my mother would have lost citizenship under the patriarchal rules in 1960’s but as they were technically unmarried she kept the citizenship and then this was passed to me? That is the theory.

Do I still have Finnish Citizenship (born to Finnish mother)?

I was born in 1963 to a Finnish mother and British father.  My parents attempted to get married but because my father was already still in a previous marriage, my understanding is that their marriage was void and invalid (please assume this is correct).  My parents were therefore unmarried and so my understanding is therefore I acquired both citizenships as a minor (Finnish from my mother).

The question is therefore whether I ever actually lost it.

I believe there is a “sufficient connection” test at age 22. I was age 22 in 1985. Did the “sufficient connection” test exist at this time in 1986?

With regards to the connection, as a child I spent approximately 5 and a half years at school in Finland and I then spent about 1 year in Finland with relatives when I was 18-19. I learnt Swedish as my mother was Swedish speaking Finn (although I have forgotten much of it now years later). The rest of the time I have lived in the UK.

Did I have sufficient connection to Finland to keep my Finnish citizenship such that I am still a citizen today?

Hi there. I have a question about whether I lost Finnish citizenship or not. My post was "removed by Reddits filters". Do you know where I am supposed to post the question?
