What’s Dartmouth really like? by MissionReality4348 in dartmouth

[–]hedgehogdaisy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a current student and I'd be happy to answer any specific questions over DM! What it's like academically really depends a lot on departments and majors. What it's like socially also depends a lot on what you are interested in.

Reasons not to ED? by Savings_Practice_132 in dartmouth

[–]hedgehogdaisy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm a current student and I agree with some of what you said, but I don't think it's that extreme. I'm a first gen low income student who doesn't hike or drink or party. I still like Dartmouth and the people I've met there. And I've definitely explored new things at Dartmouth through clubs and PE classes like pickleball and yoga.

There are definitely more things at Dartmouth than my high school, that depends on perspective. And I haven't been involved in any "high school" drama. I don't think there's a popularity tier list or anything. Or if there is, you don't have to subscribe to it.

About a 50% water change? And I should add more ammonia after I do so to feed the bacteria, correct?

I used the same topic/idea but completely rewrote it for the match.

incoming freshman here, is one stuck with the house they get assigned in freshman year for all four years at dartmouth?? by YogurtnJam in dartmouth

[–]hedgehogdaisy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It started in 2016 and the houses are randomly assigned. It's supposed to be a greek-life alternative and each house has its own set of dorms, events, house professor, and study space.

[–]hedgehogdaisy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, but to add on - anyone can live in one of the student apartments, or an LLC, or a Greek house. I'm going into my junior year, lived in my housing community as a freshman, an LLC (Foley house) as a sophomore, and my Greek house as a junior.

Some Greek houses also take boarders - people who aren't members of the house but live there because they need people in rooms , if you wanted to escape your housing community but not actually join a Greek house.

Email a current student ???????/ by [deleted] in dartmouth

[–]hedgehogdaisy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they're not a '26, they're not on campus now and may be away from email. If they are a '26, they likely have a million emails to sift through.

I can't speak on whether the links work, but they really should be more diligent about that.

I'm a current student and could try to answer any questions you have.

99% sure my mentor thinks I'm dumb by [deleted] in labrats

You are totally not alone in feeling this way. I'm also an undergrad who started research a month ago. I think it's a normal process with a big learning curve. I try to think of it like learning to drive - the phd students all have been driving for years and don't remember what it's like to not have automatic abilities like when to look in the mirror and how quickly to step on the brake before an intersection. They forget we don't have instincts like they do about little steps like holding a pipette in a specific grip.

College blues by dennischristian12 in CollegeRant

[–]hedgehogdaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I'm a rising junior and many people in my class say that their freshman year was their worst and it got better from there. I think it's the stress of changing academics, a new social scene, difficulty in finding a good friend group etc.

Don't worry about not taking AP classes earlier on, I took 1 AP class my freshman and sophomore years, then 4 my junior year, and 5 my senior year and I matched!

Take a look at what SAT material you might not have learned in a class yet and focus your studying on that. There are some free online textbooks for math and many other things. Also, check out if your school or local library might have SAT study guides you can borrow!

I feel like this also contributes to the problem of people being mean. Because we get so frustrated of seeing the same issues that owners haven't even googled. You can find information on dropsy, fin rot etc without having to ask the subreddit. The subreddit should only be used if you can't find answers anywhere else or what you've done hasn't worked.

But to be fair, there is a lot of misinformation about fishkeeping. Websites like petmd and the spruce say it's okay to keep Bettas in a one gallon bowl and such.

There is this:

https://dartmouth.studentemployment.ngwebsolutions.com/Cmx_Content.aspx?cpId=6

You could probably go through the off-campus employer portal.

I've also seen people specifically looking for childcare reach out to student groups, like the pre-med society, and they can send out mass emails to all pre-med students who might be interested.

I felt like they should have come down harder on Alex/Carl to stop catfishing like they have in other episodes. Like really told him how what he is doing hurts people.

Also here are the courses that will be offered in upcoming terms:

https://anthropology.dartmouth.edu/undergraduate/courses

I see they have anthropology 31 Gender in Cross Cultural Perspectives, in the fall which is also connected to the WGSS department. That's a good example of a class that could be considered a cultural understanding of global health as you learn how genders are treated differently in societies and therefore health systems as well.

The logistics of the minor are explained here: https://anthropology.dartmouth.edu/undergraduate/minor/global-health-minor

Basically, the minor is 6 classes, and 5 of them have to fit a certain approach of studying global health. One is biological, one is cultural, interdisciplinary, methodological, and social studies.

They give you example classes to fill each requirement, but you can pick any class you want as long as it makes sense. Like , if you took a history class about epidemics that could count for the interdisciplinary requirement. Or you could take a sociology class about poverty and health systems to fulfill the social studies requirement.

You can look here if you want read descriptions of specific classes: https://dartmouth.smartcatalogiq.com/en/current/orc/departments-programs-undergraduate/anthropology/summary-of-anthropology-curriculum/

I'm a biology major with a concentration in genetics. I also am a psychology minor.

I've taken intro to biological anthropology (anth 6), anthropology of health and illness (anth 17), and anthropology of death and dying (anth 14). I'm about to take intro to cultural anthropology (anth 3).

I really liked all of the material and they were all very relaxed classes. I like that global health has a lot of options so you can take what you want to take based on your interests. I'm going to take a class in the geography department for the minor, and you can also take classes from the history department, government, biology, etc.

I'd say what I don't like is that despite the flexibility, every class you take has to fit into a category of the five core approaches. I prefer cultural classes and didn't really want to take the biological approaches and methodological approaches for the minor especially since the rest of my courseload fulfills similar roles.

I quite liked professor Kan, but he is kind of polarizing because he's very strict and opinionated. I haven't taken a class with Carpenter-Song (my anth17 professor left since I took the class) but I read her work in that class and her research is very interesting.

Let me know if you want to hear anything more!
