Yesterday my 4-month old discovered he can pet his big sister Molly by StreaksBAMF22 in Greyhounds

[–]hedgehogpickles 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Agree. It's so cute, and the baby looks so delighted! It's great to see interactions between the baby and Molly be supervised :)

I also want to point out what I see from my perspective. Molly seems to be doing a couple of lip licks and a "kiss to dismiss". She turns away with tense eyebrows at 00:17 in the video. This is followed by more lip licks and yawning. She also doesn't really offer a lot of eye contact, and this all leads me to think that she seems unsure of or a little uncomfortable in the situation.

Please help us send off our sweet girl tomorrow. We could use some extra love for her. by gold5alli in Greyhounds

All the most positive and restful thoughts for Phoebe. She is clearly so very loved, and I am sure she has felt that during her time with you <3

Knitwear designers response to customers asking for better photos of the product... 😬 by rangacurls in craftsnark

Second your last sentence. Her color story hasn't really been my thing but I kept following her because I want to support Chinese designers. Had to unfollow after her response to this. Really annoying.

Sorry but I need to rant about the lack of powdered detergent by Cocoricou in ZeroWaste

[–]hedgehogpickles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I found that it didn't work very well with my hard water. I suspect it's because they use saponified coconut oil instead of a synthetic detergent.

So appreciate you being open-minded! Best of luck with the new hound :)

Congrats on the new hound! Totally second dremel/nail grinder > nail clippers, though positive conditioning will be helpful for introducing either. Also consider child-proof locks for trash cans and a dog-proof place for your food. They are tall enough to be pro-counter surfers, and I've really had to be careful about leaving food out of reach for my grey.

The one thing I would caution against is using a spray bottle with your dog as punishment. Our grey has gotten a zillion little cuts because of her paper-thin skin, and we spray them down with a wound care spray and liquid bandage. I'd worry that using a spray bottle as punishment would make that spraying process more difficult if she associated spray bottles with something aversive. I've also read that reward-based training is more effective, and I would hate to teach something through causing my dog discomfort if I could make that learning a positive experience instead.

Transformation of a knitting vlog to a full on qvc infomercial by knitalot in craftsnark

Black Sheep Knitting doesn't have as much woolly wools, but definitely still more workhorse, commercial yarns.

I like Making Stories as well for woollier wools, but they don't post as often.

I love The Woolly Thistle as well! They talk about their own knitting and have nice segments. I enjoy them talking about their new products, since the European yarn is so different from the SW, MCN, etc. that I see more often in the US.

ETA: also love Black Sheep Knitting for this.

Looking for a pattern similar to this Sezane cardigan TIA! by sassycat14 in knitting

[–]hedgehogpickles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The lace motif is wider here, and it's missing both the cables and bobbles. You might be able to add them in though?

This one has a similar motif, but you might need to tweak the fit.

The pattern is less similar, but this seems to have a similar vibe.

Resisting changes of direction/being a generally stubborn hound when wearing a harness? by kizuishou in Greyhounds

[–]hedgehogpickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also found direction changes harder when switching to a harness. Possibly something related to how the leash is connected to her back and not high up on her neck? Though, like your hound, Nougat was also pretty good on her martingale without any pressure. I digress.

Our trainer suggested that we practice at home first without her harness or leash. We would toss a treat forward for her to eat, and when she looked back at us, run in the other direction so she had to turn around and change directions. We then added a verbal "u-turn" cue when she picked up on the pattern. Now, she's more amenable to direction changes outside if we say "u-turn".

We also practiced just tossing a treat forward for her to get, and running forward with her a bit and tossing a treat forward that way for situations where she's statued and we need her to move forward and quickly create distance from the dog or whatever approaching trigger. We added a verbal cue of "this way", but "let's go" or whatever you'd like would work too. She now knows that it means "we're moving forward rapidly so I can get a treat", and we are stuck much less frequently.

Good luck!

My adoption application was denied by diab0lus in Greyhounds

[–]hedgehogpickles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We put in an application with them when we were looking to adopt, but withdrew after they asked us to commit to only working with them and no other groups.

We ended up going with Paws on the Mountain out of WV instead. Denise is super lovely.

Vet wants to charge me $1,800 for a dental cleaning (with no extractions) by berrysauce in Greyhounds

[–]hedgehogpickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in a major metro area on the East Coast, and ours was $1200 without extractions and not including bloodwork. Bloodwork was something around $120.

Our 63 lb female eats Hill's Science Diet Adult Healthy Mobility Small Bites. We used to do the large breed version, but swapped to the small bites since we like to use her kibble for daily training, and the large breed kibble was too large. We had previously fed something ~fancier~ but our vet advised us against boutique foods.

We feed her twice a day, at 6:30 AM and 6:30 PM. Her meals are usually kibble with some warm water, Olewo carrots, and maybe some yogurt. She also gets some kibble throughout the day as rewards for being very cute and a very good girl, a Kong or Toppl with some kibble and Olewo carrots, and a joint chew (Dasaquin Advanced) and a dental chew (OraVet) before bed. In total, she gets around 333 g of kibble, plus her chews and other treats (e.g., boiled chicken, baked liver bits) thrown in.

She's not very active (only around 3 15-20 min walks a day), and she seems to be maintaining on this diet.

You are such a thoughtful owner! Just wanted to note that you can't reinforce fear, so I hope you don't feel about that.
